So, we must install both Oracle Discoverer and Oracle Express on Oracle Database Server? Are they easy to use??
You can only use a OLAP tool on Oracle 8.1.7 relational database. Suggest you build a Star of a Snowflake schema (which is denormalised) as against a normalised database structure. Refer billinmon.com and ralphkimball.com for more details on Star and Snowflake schema. You can then use OLAP tools like Business Objects, COgnos, etc.

However, if you want to go in for a multidimensional database which is known for faster access as information/data is organised in a format which is eay to access, then you will have to go in for a MDDB server - Oracle Express Server 6.2 and form multidimensional cubes for viewing them in OLAP tool.

There is an option in express Server 6.2 (ROLAP) to access directly the Oracle relational database and still form cubes. If you are using Oracle Express Objects 2.5 as a front end OLAP tool, it is slightly tough to build as compared to other OLAP tools and requirese some amount of programming.

Oracle 9i however has all these options in built. As a simple option suggest you build a star schema and then use an OLAP tool.
Oracle Discoverer is one tool, Oracle Express is another tool. These are DIFFERENT tools. They need special education and are complex tools. There are differences in the scope of these tools. More information you can find in OTN.

So, if I have a server Win2000 with Oracle 8.1.7 on it. Now I want to setup OLAP system with the database of the above Oracle. I want to install Oracle Express on this server too. Can I do that? And then, when install Oracle Express, how do I solve the problem about Oracle Home???
You can install Oracle Express 6.2 Database on the existing Win 2000 database server. There will not be any problem of Oracle Home.

Proposed answer rejected.

rohitrevo,

You should only leave your remarks in the form of an Answer when you are absolutely, 100 per cent certain that your suggestion is the ONLY perfect solution to the problem posed by the Asker.

Experts Exchange is a collaborative site, and when you "Answer", as opposed to "Comment", you lock the question and remove it from the easily seen open questions. That inhibits the collaborative process.

Further, you'll notice that rejected Answers are distinguished by a bright red banner. Personally, that makes me feel about two inches tall...<grin>
