Do you know what brand or model # it is?  You can sometimes tell by looking at the silk screen printing on the board...usually printed in white on the board.  Also what processor do you have in there now?  Do you know if the board has any features to set jumpers or is it jumperless.  Do you know if it has the capabilities to set the clock speed?  voltage?  anything like that?

i can't remember what i used but there is something out there called sis soft  if that is correct, and it was a free trial program that i used and it tells you the capabilities and functions that your motherboard supports... also try looking at the motherboard and see if u can find the name and model.. then you can go online and look it up on the manufacture's website

One more way to identify what kind of board you have is to download:

http://www.unicore.com/biosmd/021801/bwz-rel.exe

and run it. It'll tell you what you have and then you can follow up by going to your board maker's website and locate (hopefully) manuals and such....

Hey Jack, that is SiSoft Sandra.  You can get it at http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/sandra

I know some details abt the MB. It's having Award Bios.

4.51 PG version. and the number it's showing is
07/23/97-VT82C580VP-2A5LA008C-00

There is no options in the BIOS to set CPU Speed and Voltage. some Jumpers are there...

How to Use SISoft Sandra..? is it can find a MB's capability..???

regards
In that number 2A5LA008C if that 00 is really o0 then your motherboard was manufactured by icean

Go here for an explanation of your BIOS code

Hum you mean Ocean/Octek don't you?

I think it's an Octek Rhino 12, check the manuals in this directory against your board....
ftp://ftp.octek.com.au/MainBoard/Pentium/Rhino%2012
However it could be the 12+, check these too.
ftp://ftp.octek.com.au/MainBoard/Pentium/Rhino%2012+

Now, the fastest CPU you can just "drop in" will be a Pentium 233MMX or an AMD K6-233 by the specs, but with varying degrees of inginuety there are other CPUs that you could probably use. Probably the easiest faster CPU to use would be a Cyrix/Via M2 PR366 or PR400 running at 3.5x75, or if you can find the undocumented 83Mhz bus speed setting and your cards will cope with a 41.5 Mhz PCI bus, running at 3x83 or even 3.5x83. This will probably boot and work but your bios will display the CPU type wrongly on the BIOS flash screen, this is usually no biggie and the CPU will usually work.

At a skim thourgh the specs it looks like it will support a CPU with a power requirement up to 30 Watts, I think that maybe that will run a K6-2 350 if the BIOS will let it, K6-2s are a try it and see kind of deal on a board this old, it could refuse to boot. However, it doesn't look like you have the extra K6 multiplier jumper so to get above 290Mhz you'd have to drop a wire across a couple of pins in the socket, a kind of tricky operation.

If you got a powerleap socket adapter with it's own regulator onboard, it is possible that you could run a K6-2 , K6-2+, K6-3 or K6-3+ at up to 500Mhz, but usually for the price of the adapter and the CPU you could be upgrading the system to say a celeron 500.

If you wanted to play more modern games on this machine though, and want an easy upgrade, the M2 although it looks faster on paper, is not very good in the Floating Point unit, and will run like a P200 in games, they are excellent for business apps/wordprocessing/webbrowsing etc and will seem to live up to their performance rating doing those tasks. So the best CPU you could put in there for gaming would be a Pentium 233 MMX and then you could overclock it to get low end Pentium 2 class performance (3.5x75 or 3x83 etc). The coolers available today for socket 370 and Socket A chips that also fit old socket 7 class CPUs are more than capable of keeping an overclocked Intel Pentium cool and reliable for several years.
So there you have it, that's the choices you have with your board. If you have any questions or need more information on any of that, just ask.

at Present in my hand I am having one Cyrix MII processor... what it's maximum speed and how abt it's performance with image editing softwares like photoshop and corel draw...?? is it suitable...??? or for image editing applications pentium is best ..? floating point problem is concernable in this case..?/

regards
Pentium for floating speed.

Speed depends on the processor itself.  Generally there should be a number of markings on the processor either top or bottom you can reference somewhere on the Net to determine what speed the processor is.
And I thought I had posted in here.  DBrunton has the idea.  Get a Pentium and stay away from Celeron!!!
celeron isnt bad for regular uses and dvd type stuff, in the past it was a poorly built processor but now they have the cache on die which eleminated some past issues with performance... if u want a cheap and decient processor, get the duron from AMD(heh) i dont like intel :)
