No COMM ports in DOS mode on Lap-Top

Hi

I have a Toshiba Sat Pro 4300 running Win98

Up until this week it was running Win2000 and my old DOS program (simple terminal type thing) worked fine. It saw the comm port as COMM1 and the internal modem as COMM3

Now, under windows 98, It simply does not recognize any comm ports as existing. Other apps (such as hyperterminal Win 3.1 terminal etc) see the ports no problem.

Any ideas ? Before I give up and go back to Windows 2000

Go to my Computer->Control panel->System->Device Manager/Ports (Com &LPT) and see if there are your Com ports /settings

That of course has already been done, as has updating the MB BIOS, as stated I can access the ports perfectly using any application other than the DOS application. Also this worked fine under Windows 2k so it is a Win 98 quirk.

Thankyou for taking the time to post your comment.
Try to use command MODE from dos prompt to see /configure COM's
c:\>mode com1
Status for device COM1:
-----------------------
Retry=NONE

c:\>mode com2

Status for device COM2:
-----------------------
Retry=NONE

c:\>mode com3
Illegal device name
 - COM3

MODE simply confirmed the existence of the ports, setting the baud etc have no errors but again the DOS application simply does not act upon the port. It doesn't complain (i.e. there is no report that the port doesn't exist) only no characters are sent from it and none are received) the IRQ's and Memory addresses are standard and common between the BIOS set-up on the lap-top and the Windows 98 config. I am at a total loss on this one. Having spend 2 solid days reverting to Win 98 from Win2K only to find that the most important field utility I use will not work is a major pain. Toshiba support is pathetic, anything harder than 'How do I turn my PC on?' seems beyond their scope. Typical big company syndrome.
If mode says that your coms are here try to use other program to communicate. What is this program- any kind of terminal emulation ?
