defragment disk and sql performance

hi,
does defragmenting a disk containing sql files
can decrease the sql-server performance?
i don't want to do anything i'll be sorry after.

Defragmenting should only be able to help the performance (a), but you need to stop SQL Server for this operation so the database files can be reorganized too (b).

(a) if the sql files are growing, the extents on disk may be dispersed around the disk, defragmenting should put them together again.

(b) If SQL Server is still running, the defragmenting process will not be able to reorganize the files at all.
