Modems and NW 5

What do I need to do/install to have windows workstations use modems on a novell server. (NW5)  I need to install the modems on the server too. I what apps on the workstations to use modems on a nw5 server.  I have some experience but I am not a CNA or CNE.  If someone could point me in the direction of installing the modems and installing the software, I'd be thankful.

Yes you can do this from a NW5 or 4 server. Just have NIAS installed and connect the modem or modems  to com1 or 2 and have your aiocomx drivers load in the autoexec.ncf.
Then in inetcfg configure a new board WHSMAIO and give it a name and what port your using.
Then under Network Interface configure that board with ppp routing and what type of modem driver you want it to use and any AT commands you want to include.
Then under Wan call destinations add the ISP your dialing, specify dedicated or on demand, phone # user name password.
Then under protocol have ip enabled and set your DNS servers and the default route.
Then under bindings add your ip address or  select unnumbered for the ISP to push down an ipaddress for each time you dial up.
Re intialize the system and it should dial out when there is ip traffic.

For IPX/IP network you need the IPX/IP gateway loaded on the server and the ipx/ip gateway enabled through the novell client  on the workstation.

For IP its really easy just have NAT enabled on the server.

Make sure that no fire wall is in the way.  Go through the Border Manager proxy or create proper holes.

Truly this is not hard.  This is set up on serveral of my clients.  All that you need is already within Netware.

Good Luck

Sorry nbligh, but your proposal only seems to cover 'outbound (Internet  - IP connection shared) '. I still think that either NIAS or its partial predecessor NCS also covers outbound - virtual Comports to workstations, but more research needs to be done then...

It's time to clean up this topic area and that means taking care of this question. Your options at this point are:

1. Award points to the Expert who provided an answer, or who helped you most. Do this by clicking on the "Accept Comment as Answer" button that lies above and to the right of the appropriate expert's name.

2. PAQ the question because the information might be useful to others, but was not useful to you. To use this option, you must state why the question is no longer useful to you, and the experts need to let me know if they feel that you're being unfair.

3. Delete the question because it is of no value to you or to anyone else.  To use this option, you must state why the question is no longer useful to you, and the experts need to let me know if they feel that you're being unfair.

If you elect for option 2 or 3, all you need to do is post right here as a comment, and I will take care of the rest.  We also request that you review any other open questions you might have and deal with them as necessary.

PLEASE DO NOT AWARD THE POINTS TO ME.

Hi Experts:

In the event that the Asker does not respond, I would very much appreciate your opinions as to which Expert ought to receive points (if any) as a result of this question.  Likewise, you can also suggest that I PAQ or delete the question.

Experts, please do not add further "answer" information to this question.  I will be back in about one week to finalize this question.

Thank you everyone.
