General Networking Question (I should Know this)

I basically handle the computers and network where I work.  Everthing was setup before I came here.  What I what to know is simple. (I think)  The network is small 30 workstartions and we have t1 internet access.  Can someone explain DHCP,WINS, and DNS.  Or give me a good link that explains all this.  Also what would be an optimal configuration for the workstations as far as tcp/ip goes.   Easy Points  Thanks....

www.cisco.com and either www.novell.com or www.microsoft.com.

Enter the names in the search engines at the web site.
The topics are not as easy as 1-2-3, but most of this is within reach of a person in your position.

A good site for these terms is http://www.whatis.com
In your configuration DHCP is not necessary, DHCP affect "dynamical" @IP to the station who are connected to you'r network.

WINS run on a server NT, it's a service who translate dynamicely NetBios Name to a @IP, for example wks1 to @IP 10.1.201.1, it's a good solution too reduse the netbios resolving name traffic.

DNS is not dynamic, you must create the entry to convert name to @IP. WINS can resolve only netbios name (not station1.domain.com) DNS offert the possibility to resolve station1.domanin.com and station1.domain.net to the same @IP.

In yopur configuration use WINS to increase the network speed. You can use DNS entry to resolve some name like pop3.mail.compagny.net if you have a messaging server.

Best regard from france.

Great info and explainations.
Here are some sites you may want to look at dhcp.org, dns.net/dnsrd, and microsoft.com/windows2000/library/howitworks/communications/nameadrmgmt/wins.asp

It's time to clean up this topic area and that means taking care of this question. Your options at this point are:

1. Award points to the Expert who provided an answer, or who helped you most. Do this by clicking on the "Accept Comment as Answer" button that lies above and to the right of the appropriate expert's name.

2. PAQ the question because the information might be useful to others, but was not useful to you. To use this option, you must state why the question is no longer useful to you, and the experts need to let me know if they feel that you're being unfair.

3. Delete the question because it is of no value to you or to anyone else.  To use this option, you must state why the question is no longer useful to you, and the experts need to let me know if they feel that you're being unfair.

If you elect for option 2 or 3, all you need to do is post right here as a comment, and I will take care of the rest.  We also request that you review any other open questions you might have and deal with them as necessary.

PLEASE DO NOT AWARD THE POINTS TO ME.

Hi Experts:

In the event that the Asker does not respond, I would very much appreciate your opinions as to which Expert ought to receive points (if any) as a result of this question.  Likewise, you can also suggest that I PAQ or delete the question.

Experts, please do not add further "answer" information to this question.  I will be back in about one week to finalize this question.

Thank you everyone.
