What i would idealy like is for someone to come up with a totally new network which this business could use. Please include the pc's, ie pentium III 800 MHz etc hard disk sizes RAM

a Server which uses ideally windows 2000 or novell netware

routers, bridges, repeaters, 10base2 or whatever, rj45 connections NIC's, everthing in as much detail as possible and PLEASE try to include the prices in sterling ###

I would like to give you a good assessment on this but I would need a little more info.

These two seperate offices, how far are they apart?
Is there any money constraints on this?
Is 10baseT or 100baseTx an option?  This will require recabling.
In the pic you posted their is a bridge and then that is connected to something but I cannot tell what , same with a couple other things in the pic.  Could you write out a detail of what you have and what you need.  And include alot of detail.
It sounds like you might be looking for a complete overhaul, is that correct?  Have you thought about what it would take to migrate?  Or is migrating not what you are looking to do?  You might just be building a completely new network from scratch, including servers and PCs.

We need alot more detail if you want this done right.

not only we need information jwalsh88 mentioned, you need to provide information on what applications are running and how and where are the users accessing them.

consider these:
1- where are the users and where are the resources they need to access?
2- who are the power users? (those who need more speed)
3- where are the servers?   how many users is each of them servicing? and what type of services?

First off I believe the whole company is going to need to be re-wired if at all possible.

Get rid of everything else, and drop some CAT5 cabling throughout the whole company.

It seems you have some very old computers (I think I saw 486's) these will not work with Windows 2000 Network, and a NOVELL network would run really slow with it.

Personally I think this is a crap load of work for 200 points, but I just wanted to get you off to a start.

This would be a couple thousand dollar consulting job that I am not going to handle for 200 points.

not trying to sound pissy at all, but I just wanted to let you know.

I do suggest though that you re-wire the company, figure out where you want to go in turns of applications (to decide what NOS you want to run - NOVELL or MSW2k), and then buy all new (or newer) computers.

Sorry can't help more

the offices are approx 30 Miles appart so i think a leased ISDN line would do, I am trying to build a complete new network, so what i need to know is:-

1. Client/Server network
2. what OS, Novell Netware or win2000
3. What type of NIC'd to use, preferably RJ45 (think it is)
4. Wires, RJ45 compatible
4. Suitable file server
5. Anyother stuff like bridges, routers, hubs that u think many be required

PS I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU!!!

Too much on my plate at moment, mothers day weekend, but consider some time over weekend with (reading) this:
http://www.microsoft.com/TechNet/isa/isatecov.asp
Much good on many concepts (had it handy)

For desktops and servers, I'd not raise sweat. Mucho cheap and big these days.

For design, main deal clarifying just what has to be done that is unique (apps) for user, needs, and security necessities.

Please return to this question.

> the offices are approx 30 Miles appart so i think a leased ISDN line would do, I am trying to build a complete new network,

ISDN used to be good idea. Bells were slow upgrading. DSL similar. By now Bells have changed both on you (again) so answer could vary based on geography.

Also different is capabilities for data movement, not simply speed but directional. Each can have up and down. For speed need you could buy into T1. Or consider Sonet.

OS choice should be MS, Novell, Linux, MAC ... generically, depending on needs. Each adds benefits anew each year. (Unix alternatives for special needs)
