It seems like someone else just said that. rbr, you must be a point monger.

Who cares about a faster CD-ROM? Unless you need to access CD's ALL THE TIME (like you constantly search encyclopedia, or phonebooks or such), 8X is fine for normal use! Heck, I use a "hex-speed" at home!
Yea, what's all the fuss about? I used to have a 50x but it was way too fast for me. I got rid of that thing and now I just use a 0 speed.

The CD actually sticks out a little bit when I put it in the drive and I use my finger to spin it myself. I works fine for me.

To snapperhead: I didn^t see johnsm comment. We answered almost at the same time.
Anything above 12x is a waste of time for the average gamer as it takes ages to get the angular velocity upto speed, and most games are written to expect 4x at best. And the 40x+ CD drives are hell when there are badly minted CD's in them.
Lab_Rat is right! I use a 32X and have lots of problems
with it, even with orignals - then I plug the cd into
the 12X on another computer, always works.
Fast CDdrives require "perfect" CD's
I just bought a 48X and now I have no time for smoke breaks. I'm takin it back.
funny, funny...
Yeah it sure is... Ever heard about sense of humor kschang ?
I have a 24x speed, if I leave my computer on when the CD-rom kicks in it sounds like an aircraft taking off in my office.

Although my 24x runs quicker when it comes to copying files onto the HDD.  But I found it made no difference for games and in some cases it was actually slower overall, but this was running on a Cyrix 5x86 100Mhz which stuggled to cope with the speed of the CD-ROM, if I tried to do anything on startup, as soon as the CD came on it crash the PC.
Yes, but newer CD-ROM drives have a better access time...
I've got a 24x CDR and a 6x CDRW, the speed difference isn't that noticable for playing games.  If anythinfg the 6x is better.

the 24x helps when installing the games though.

Ooh man, are you nuts ? I heavily recommend you throw your CD-ROM away and buy one of those ultra-modern 5.25" floppydrives.
Buy a 2.5 kB rewritable stone disk of four tons that will last at least 1,000,000 years.

https://www.experts-exchange.com/EQ.10172659

:P
you're all WRONG, buy a TRUE 50X and tell me if that's any good.   I dont have a cdrom at all!  And I need one, want to give me one of those cool ultra-modern 5.25'' floppy drives?
Hi komputer_whiz!

To buy a new CD-drive is not an elegant decision.
First download and try this:

Virtual Drive

Compressed Size

Virtual Drive gives you an easy way to store CD-ROM images on your computer, without having to insert the CD-ROM every time you need to access data. It actually creates a new drive letter that's accessible through Explorer just like any other drive. Simply insert a disc into the drive and click Build VCD. The contents of the CD are transferred to a virtual file that can be compressed to save space. Do this with as many CDs as you want, then choose an image to mount; the image appears as though the CD-ROM is actually in the drive. Today's large hard-drive size makes programs like Virtual Drive the perfect solution for avoiding disk juggling and slow CD-ROM speeds. The built-in Rapid Cache Manager optimizes the CD-ROM speed and caching capabilities of the virtual drive and the standard drives. Virtual Drive is easy to use and should be evaluated by anyone who constantly uses multiple CDs over and over again. It even works with audio CDs.

Wasn't the question about one of those cup-holders??

I had the same problem with my old 4x cup-holder, but I accidently spilled soda all over my computer when I tried to refill a glass that I mistakenly thought was in the cupholder.  Now I have a brand new computer with a cup-holder so fast I can't keep my drinks from flying everywhere.

Which reminds me, why the heck are mouse pads so small?  I can only use half my computer screen because I can't get the mouse all the way to the corners!
I hadn't visited this question in over month. You guys are really funny. When I read through the whole thread, I was laughing so hard someone came into my office and asked what the hell I was doing.

Keep up the good work and the sense of humor.
:)

hey jsexton-  get a smaller screen silly!  People like you just drive me crazy - you have to have the biggest screen on the block, but then we smart ones get to laugh when you realize you can't use it all.  Ha-ha.  See where pride'll get ya'?
yeah yeah.  For your information, Brad, I figured out how to use the mouse - when I run out of room on the mousepad, I just go down the side of the desk.  Works great!
I have furnished my mouse pad with all sorts of cool doll house furniture that my daughter stopped playing with.
the poor blokes been bomb-bareed with comments
Why don't you just put the CD into the 5.25" Floppy drive?
And if the CD won't fit, go to

http://www.wowcd.com

and buy one of their shaped cds.  Just have them shape it like a 5.25" floppy!
I bought a CD the other day. The program was called "CD Recordable 650 MB". When I tried to find the files on it nothing was there. I went back to exchange it for another one and same thing happened. Maybe I need that 5.25" Floppy drive to get it to work.
BTW isn't it ironic that someone with the name "Komputer_whiz" would ask how to upgrade a CDrom drive?
komputer_whiz, rbr is (technically) correct, you can not upgrade a CD-ROM. What astonishes me a bit is, that amid all this more or less funny jokes, nobody except Dedushka suggested something how to make the most of the existing CD-ROM drive. Result of a quick internet search:

Kick-Start Your CD-ROM Drive

Can I improve CD-ROM performance through software settings?

Just order everything on 3.5 disks and remove the cd drive, install one of those 3 fan hard drive coolers facing out so it keeps you cool while you wait for everything to load. Or play a game of frisbee with your cd's while you wait.
No wonder komputer_whiz does not come back. Not much help here and the jokes are sort of lame.
he / she had the answer on the first and second attempts and hasn't responded
alexhudghton: The technically correct answer is not always the appropriate one. If you consider that 40% of E-E users are not english speaking persons, then a bit of interpretation is recommended.
it looks to me that this was supposed to be a joke to start with.  I find it entertaining, and I learned a lot.  I have recently purchased a 4-ton stone disk drive for a great bargain (2 bushels of maize).
jsexton, then it was a real bargrain...>8-P
I can crack jokes too, at least at this level, but I would never make fun _of_ an asking person, unless it is posted in the Lounge.
cri, i'm with you
jexton, thanks.
PS: Actually you got an amaizing bargrain...
Hahaha, how funny... *sarcastic*
Bring a better one.
i'll tell you a bargain:

person recently paid me $30 to take away their 1980 Dumb-Terminal!!! ..no cup holder, no floppy, no mice about it!
(why upgrade your cdrom when u can downgrade someone elses!..)
You know, reading these answers from the bottom up is funnier than reading them from the top down.
caddex, which leaves me wondering 'where' you rate your own comment.
This is pretty sad when a simple question turns into a message board.  Especially one with such bad jokes.
Geos, and what is your answer to komputer_whiz ask&abandon question ?
Go tell Mom!

THE QUESTION WAS A JOKE. DUMB@.
whatboy, perhaps, but as you can see from my first comment, there are several ways to improve the performance. As it was komputer_whiz first and only question, how can you so sure how s/he meant it ?

And, no need to get rude.
Same date registered same date question...
No other comments from him/her...
About the same date in the Lounge someone posted similar Q...

Hey i'm not rude... Have you haven't slap someone for being meddles??? whitout a clue, and being moaning???
whatboy, can you expand your last sentence ? Dont have a clue what you mean with it.
never mind there cri, it wasn't meant for you anyway...
hey who's joking?...this is deadly serious, really confounding, and potently ponderous stuff!!!

its not if the dumb question was sincere or not...
its if the dumb replies are funny enough!!!

anyway, this dumb question still remains unanswered!(komputer_whiz should reject rbr's proposed answer as it doesn't offer a solution to UPGRADE the existing cup holder)
-also the points should obviously be raised due to the perplexity of the problem

everyone knows you can upgrade and greatly speed-up a given cup holder:

by vastly increasing the power supply via temporarilly borrowing the cpu fan power cable for the cdrom during lenghty cdrom proceedures on UDMA compliant systems

by placing the cdrom on its side to reduce lateral lacency
and increase "angular velocity"

by periodically lubricating the tray slide to reduce drag resistance

by inserting blank discs to speed up the read n write times

by going to www.microshaft.com/upgrades/cupholders/newfeatures/ and downloading the: stopslowingdownmyqualitycdromwithyourcrappyos.bat patch

by daisy chaining the ide cable direct onto the cpu pins

by enabling smartcupholder.exe and cupholderdrive.sys in the autonoexec.exe and unconfig.suss files

or by adjusting the speed buttons on the front of it (near the HP socket) during lenghty copy & installs

and if none of the above fix the problem...return it to the place of purchase for warranty and tell them to replace it cos you've tried all this!....
Now what's wrong with a little joke???, some people just are to serious to take life as a joke... They Die Quickly... now that's a good thought...
i will not fade away quietly, into the night!... >:[
i will not go, without a fight!... >:O
aaAAARRRGHHHhh!!!.. <:O
{;o
I'm not sure what sickens me more:
The fact that so many people took the time to actually post these comments or the fact that I've been reading them for the last half hour while the person on the other end of my phone explained problems with their computer which I now have to fix without any knowledge of what's really going on with it.  " Um sir, could you repeat that?"
Duct tape.  Duct tape fixes everything and everything can be made better (or in this case faster) with duct tape.
Now Geos... Was it that hard...??? How do you feel about your "Bad Joke"???
Oh...I think it's a really bad joke...but then I was being sarcastic about the bad jokes thing...;>
You can also upgrade to a cup holder that provides greater data compression by spinning faster - everybody knows that the centrifugal force will shove all the bits toward the outside rim and therefore make room for more data in the inner tracks of the disk...
cleaning your cup-holder regularly can also speed up an aging cup-holder that may have seen one two many spills.
cleaning your cup-holder regularly can also speed up an aging cup-holder that may have seen one two many spills.
fools.. the cup holder he was refering to is actually a cd rom drive!

after reading all those worthless comments, im glad i was the only one to be able to figure it out :)

this one separates the experts from the novices. huh!
I think you're wrong ibo.  The people here are all "experts" and if he says cup holder, I think he knows what he's talking about.  Perhaps you do know it all but do you really think everyone here is so stupid that they are ALL wrong?
A cd-rom....geeez.......where did this guy come from?
1cell, guess you missed ibo's :)

To all: Can we switch this thread towards how to have it loading faster ?
i agree
or eject faster!
or how to remove a stuck cup!
How to remove a stuck cup ?

Put the duct tape sticky side up !
Damn, my cup holder is only 8x, which slowed my mouse clicks down, preventing me from manageing to reach the 'check here for e-mail confirmation' box before hitting 'submit'

ah - got it!
In all this drivel...I have derived a serious question....sorta....would the cd storage type image utility software thing allow for  a person to point a game at the image file for the cd check?   My  copy of Delta Force is in bad shape and I was unable to obtain a legal backup....the enemies of the world await but I can only combat them provided my cupholder agrees that the disc is in the drive.....we disagree often....I say yes...it says no....would this get around that?

DaveMon
Post this as question or search the net. www.softseek.com or www.zdnet.com or a regular search engine, try www.metacrawler.com or similar.
My cup holder is only 4 speed. It ok most of the time (four cups at a time is plenty) but can be annoying when freinds come over... we have to wait ages for our cup to be held. There's also a much longer wait between putting the cup down and picking it back up again, and during peak hour it slows down my internet connection by trying to cache the RAM through the mouse port so my internet keyboard can find the setup.ini file for my sound card's microphone port which is plugged into my modem. This is very tiring, as i have to manually go around with a magnet, and force the stupid electrons to flow through the wires, because they can't seem to fin the way themselves...
wow, i had the same problem c man!!!
the rfc's for my rs232 didnt like cups so i told them i wanted a faster one so i could drink more. but instead they told me i needed more ram so the operating system could thunk more chunks into cache so my laser would burn brighter and get more data through my processor, so now i have a 50,000rpm optical throwing, ankle chopping, plastic burning projectile cup holder
and i can actually close it now .

if that dosent answer your question, lemme know... i have another answer.

:)

the c man: reboot your internet keyboard; I think there's a nut loose on it.
maybe his cupholder compromised his keyboard...

(hows that for media shift??)

This will solve all your problems.  The problem you all have is you are using IDE cup holders.  The problem with that is they are slow and unstable.  Get a SCSI cup holder there are more initial so it is beter.  And I can run my 100X SCSI 3 Ultra 2 Wide with no problems at all.

Only Problem with me geting the 100X is I had to go out and by a 20G Solid State Hard Drive.  I would give you the RPM rating but it has no moving parts.  The seek time on the hard drive is 10 nano secounds, and I can fill the hole hardrive in 2 secounds.

So now because I can fill the Hard drive so fast I needed something to fill it with so I went out and Got an OC64 line.  works good I can now download at 200G/Secound, and all.  Only one problem, my proceser is only a p75.

I need Help
Try overclocking - my p75 is running at 90Mhz
no i was joking about the p75.  I have an AS400
In that case, mikeTmike, try underclocking.  Maybe your CPU will last longer.  Besides, at 400MHz, it's much too fast for your 100X cupholder.

BTW, happy Y2K all you wacky nuts and bolts out there!!!
AS400 is not a 400Mhz processer.  It is a 2Ghz prozesser.
regardless, you'll need to underclock it to be compatable with Folger's Crystals and Maxwell House
Well, there you go.
jeeze!
cant anyone come up with better jokes!!!
What, you think we're joking around here?  Cup holder trouble is no laughing matter.  (Besides, there's 50 points on the table!)

Anyway, whaddya want for free?!
i want:
a cup holder capable of holding multiple cups at various speeds..
a quiet cup holder..
a cup holder that doesnt spill!
a cup holder that does for computers,
what Bill Gates did for online romance..
what Steve Jobs did for his Apple shares
what Linus Torvalds did for a "user friendly" os..
what ufo's do for people on drugs..
what beer does for soccer!
what viagra did for couch potatoes
what computers have done for the next generation "mouse potatoes"........

ok i admit its a lot to ask fo free..
:)
try expresso
me thinks maybes im lookin' for an Irish cup-holder...:)
well, my cup holder broke, i couldent hold a pint of beer god damn it!!!!!!!!! now needs a new 40 - 50x cup holder....

But really though, i have heard its possible to clock cdrom drives like a cpu.....
????
its news to me...
:0
do tell all
:)
er the cup holder clocking that is??

just reject everyone's answer and give me the points and we can get sexual with the cdrom drive.
well this is going back, but when the 12 were being released, i had heard you could go inside and actually play around with the speed, but i was warned...... not sure if its a myth, i never tried
hey has anyone ever actually tried running a 5 1/4" cup in their holder??

just wondering (i get bored sometimes and the weirdest thoughts pop in..)
Why mess with CD-ROMs in the cupholder at all; get a DVD-ROM drive where the X means 10-times as much as for CDs.  Heck an 8X DVD would be running 12,000 KB/s
But a 8x DVD drive holds just as many cups as a 8x CD drive.

What you really need is a laserdisk player. They hold a lot of cups.
Or 1 Jumbogantic-Ultra-Shlurrrp-in-a-Barrel, from the local convenience store.  (The more you buy, the cheaper they get; keep pouring till it's free!)  Good for those marathon programming sessions.
ok experts:
question?

how about how to remove a RH Linux cup after mounting it then having exited Linux??

(cant retrieve my cup, damn thing wont open)!

Linux has possessed my cupholder!
can auto mount cupholder in fstab
but cant auto dismount upon exiting!!

gota load another os to retake control again, or reload linux and tell it to dismount!!!

its enough to cry over spilt coffee!
:)
Linux is evil! Use Windows!
<collapses laughing at own irony>
obviously not an expert here
your just subhuman

solutions are welcome

i waz kinda lookin' for an expert answer here...!???
:)
guess ill have ta try them linux gurus
yknow them guys that read the instructions on the side of the cornflakes packs..??
they know a user friendly cup holder from a "goota tell it how ta spin" cupholder
:)
in fact they usually prefer the "gotta tell it how ta spin cupholders"....!
:)
No work, anjon??? poke your nose, watch some TV, this ain't the place to look for help, at least not this question, that the main reason to be was for fun, and like you others took it very seriosly... :)
>>...(cant retrieve my cup, damn thing wont open)!...

This i think could had been more fun if you had put it like...

(cant retrieve my cup, DAMN THING WONT OPEN <and some pounding sounds>)! :)
stop the insanity! this thread has been haunting my mailbox for a year now! :(
Just dual-boot to beos.
ibo: not possible; thread started 7/99 and it's only 1/00 now.  Also, why don't you just tell it not to email you any more?

Ahhh, but you can't, this threat is cursed, and so all that came and poke, will choke and <damn what rhymes with choke>, oh well, you'll came back...
I'm not choking yet.  I'm going to end this madness (I hope)....

Yeah like broke, coke, joke, soak, toke, woke, Roanoke, can be use as a bad thing to happen to you...

....Will choke and have a coke???
Hey, komputer whiz!

Is your computer a Gateway? They will upgrade your cupholder for free!
komputer whiz.. throw ur 8 speed now..
(or u can give it to the charity)
60x or faster r now available on stores.
I'am a non native english speaking person, some of you can explain me what experts stands for?
I guess I can figure out the meaning of exchange already.
Well, for instance, there's a character called Edio, who I understand is an expert in Pascal.  (I  presume that's the programming language rather than the Frenchman, Blaise Pascal.)
The word "expert" derives from the Latin "expertus", a past participle of "experiri" meaning "to try" and thus gain "experience" at something.  Presumably, an expert is one who has special skill or knowledge in some particular field of endeavor.
In our case the "exhange" is a "place" for trading information, hopefully "expert" information (though that may sometimes be questionable) in the field of computers and their various workings.
Well I just bought a new Gateway last year so it has the latest CD-ROM. I put a Coke in there but it spins SO FAST that all the Coke sloshes out and gets on my keyboard and everywhere else. It's a one bloomin' pain the arse cleaning that stuff up. Sheesh! You'd think I'd learn by now.
Right on!  That's why 7-up is called the "un-cola."  Besides, it mixes so well with Canadian Club....[tse tse und sheven]

Do you realize that this question is part of EE's history? I've been slumming around EE for a while now, though I'm kind of an on-again, off-again poster, and I just realized that the 1 year anniversary of this question's posting is coming up on us. According to MSIE 5.0, this page is 168,737 bytes. That is more than FOUR TIMES the size of the EE banner at the top of the page! Do you realize that this posting probably is the record setter? THink about all the records it probably holds:
Question that has gone the longest without an answer being accepted or rejected.
Question with the most answers.
Largest collection of moronic one-liners and idiotic quotes since Big Bob's Big Book o' Funny Stuff (that IS a book. I have SEEN it)
I think that we need to plan someting special for this posting's birthday. Back when this was posted, EE had only about 30 topics, versus the gajillions it has now, and people actually posted on the Windows 3.x board ;)

Rogue
accept all the comments as an answer please!
the question is, has he actually upgraded yet, the time taken (nearly a year) he would have probably upgraded his machine :)

I just figured this problem out!!!
It's not the cup holder that has the problem!!!  It's the cup!!!  It's gotta be the cup!!!
whatch out for the 2 of cups, or if you get the d-cup. whoo hoo.
cups away!
This question is STILL around?!?!?!?  This question has been on Experts Exchange almost as long as I have.

I once had a 20x cup holder.  It even said 20x on the front.  Then, one day, the motor inside died, and it wouldn't spin, so I scraped the 2 off and it actually said 0x.

Seriously, though, I always thought an 8x cup holder meant it can hold cups 8 times larger than a standard cup holder.  A 32x cup holder would hold cups 4 times bigger than what you're using now, so you don't want to upgrade your cup holder to a larger size, since you'd have to buy bigger cups.  The cups you have now would be too small and would fall through the holder.

So, unless you get REALLY thirsty, and are making a bunch of trips back to the kitchen to refill your drinks, stick with what you have.

Besides, it's really expensive.  I called up the local computer mechanic and told him I needed a bigger cup holder.  He said the cup holder is $350 and the labor to install it would be $500!
Get rid of the pc and use the extra space to put your cup. Who wants the cups to move anyway.

You could also listen to the radio instead.

You can also look into other area where u lose time, and compensate (and even gain more time). For example, you could cut your sleeping time by 30 mins.

If the problem is at work, tell you boss  you want him to take care of it or you quit. Tell him it affects productivity.
Alright, sob...sob.  I have laughed so long and hard at this silly conversation that my sides hurt and my eyes are watering.  Thanks for all the laughs.  While you folks are still getting up on those "ultra-modern 5 1/4" drives", I have a machine that it was required to have PCMCIA slots.  We have yet to purchase any PCMCIA cards to use, but the government requirement remains.  How smart is that?
