Database Backup
I'm interested in taking the backups for the databases/tables which one has already created. I know the import and export capailities of Oracle Databse, but is there any other possible way....what is the role of Backup Manager tool which comes with the installation of Oracle 7 and how to turn on/off the Support Recovery Option in the database and how to control different modes like ARCHIVELOG and NOARCHIVELOG.....?
You might want to look over your backup and recovery options as described in my white paper on the subject, which you will find at
http://www.geocities.com/tbcox23/bu_reco_wp_12.pdf
Or in MS Word format at
http://www.geocities.com/tbcox23/bu_reco_whitepaper_1_2.doc
This includes a script for creating a cold backup on Windows NT. You can modify it for Unix.
Good luck.

My request has been ignored, even though Asker logged in 3/8/02 and Administration contacted them.
Is the Proposed Answer correct so I can close this?

No, my answer really doesn't cover the ground of the question he asked. You can close the question if you like, but don't give me the points -- I haven't earned them.

ASKER CERTIFIED SOLUTION

This solution is only available to members.
To access this solution, you must be a member of Experts Exchange.
You should use archivelog mode. This gives you the ability to recover up through the last successful commit prior to a disk crash, when there is a disk crash. This assumes of course that you have the "archive_log_dest" set to a directory on a disk that does not have any Oracle tablespaces on it. You also need to manage this "archive_log_dest" to back those files up to tape periodically, then delete them from disk to insure that this directory/drive always has some free space.
If you use archivelog mode, you can do hot backups (using Backup Manager, or Oracle Enterprise Manager, or third-party tools) without needing to shut the database down for a backup.
