Strange hardware reset by using nt2000 not with nt4

hi,

i'm fighting with a strange situation.
my pc (intel p2, asus board) runs nt4 and nt2000.

when using nt4 no crashes at all occurs.
when using nt2000 the pc will crash about 5 minutes after i logged on.
a pure hardware reset is performed. i see the black (no blue) screen with the bios information, the pc will boot again.

the only thing i changed is to upgrade the memory from 256 to 512 mb.
i tested also now to use only 256 mb wich i used before the upgrade, but no success.
the 256 mb ram (2 x 128 mb) are 100 mhz, the additional
256 module is 133 mhz.

my dealer things that the faster ram should work together with the lower.

i also tried to changed the bios setup to make the ram work slower, but no success.

question:
any idea what happens here?
does win2000 use the ram differently that nt4?
what should i do to solve the problem?

i put this question in the nt2000 and hardware area with each 50 points. if you solve the question collect both points.

thanks

HR, while PC-133 will work at 100MHz, the motherboard's memory bus may not support it. Another consideration might be a difference in timing between the two memory modules. Given the older PII and Asus MB, I'd exchange the memory module for one that closely matches the existing one in speed, timing and parity.

Are you saying that you switched back to the old chip and it is still crashing?

ASKER

yes i switched back and still crashing.
strange also that since about 8 hours the pc runs with nt4 fine.
i tried one boot with nt2000, and received a crash.

if the motherboad supports 113 mhz, i don't know.
shouldn't it be because of nt4 is working?
where do i see the parity and timing?

????

hi,

does anyone know what would happen if i start the sp2 instalation and during this my pc would reboot.
can i restart my nt2000?

any suggestions?
Don't bother with SP2 at this point....I think you need to update your BIOS.  What motherboard are you using? Asus P2B? See this page http://www.asus.com/products/motherboard/bios_slot1.html for BIOS updates for various Asus Slot-1 motherboards.  Check back if you're not sure what model you have or which file to download.

hi,
i checked the bios version.
when booting up i see:

P2B-S ACPI Rev. 1012
Award Plug&Play Bios v.1.0A
03/03/00 i440BX-P2B-S-00

i check the asus page ypou mentioned and found this:
P2B-S (ATX, onboard SCSI)
- BIOS Upgrade and Road Map :

bx2s1013.zip
P2B-S BIOS Ver. 1013. 07/27/2001
Update 7890 SCSI firmware to Ver.3.0.

bx2s1012.zip
P2B-S BIOS Ver. 1012. 05/04/2000
Use Adaptec 7890 SCSI BIOS to revision 2.20.
Add microcode update.

if i understood this right, i already use the 2nd latest version.
the new vewrsion just upgrades the aha controller.

then i looked for the update tool. i asume that i need pflash.exe, but it's not downloadable.

where would i get this?
makes it sense to upgrade?

thanks
hreinart

By all means do the update. The pflash.exe file in included in the zip file you download.

Remember, you will need to repair/rebuild the hardware abstraction layer by starting a fresh install, and then choose to repair the existing installation.
hi,

there is only an *.awd file inside the zip file, nothing elese.
There should be a popup window on the Asus site when you try to download the file.  Or look elsewhere in their downloads section for the flash program.

You beat me to it Dog!

HR, try this page:

Which motherboard are you using?
P2B-S ACPI Rev. 1012

this is what i see on the screen when i boot up
HR,

The questioner has been provided with the necessary solutions for this problem as well as all the necessary links to obtain the updates and procedures to apply them.
hi,

i don't want to test this answer to see if it works, but want to close the question.

i still fear getting more problems than i now have.
I don't know why you would want to not try a solution that will most likely resolve your problem...but, its your choice of course.  The problem is probably related to ACPI implementation which ASUS had issues with on this board.  The BIOS update will fix the ACPI problems and probably resolve the issue.

-dogztar
hreinart, rarely, if ever, do BIOS updates cause problems unless there's something wrong with the system to begin with. BTW, thanks for the "B".
Experts work very hard to maintain good grade averages here at https://www.experts-exchange.com. More likely than not, they request that questions with grades less than A be deleted because many askers do not understand the grading policy, and inadvertently grade incorrectly, or perhaps may not know that the grade given in no way affects the question points paid, but greatly affects the expert points received.  For example, a 100 point question graded at a "C" flows 200 points to the Expert whereas a "B" = 300, and an "A" = 400, so it does have a direct impact to the experts who so willingly help you.

You graded this question with a "B", but failed to add comments as to why.  Please do, or I will assume that the information provided here was, indeed "A" level response and change it accordingly.   If, when you add information that may have been missing from the original award, you not only help the participants in this question by adding it, but also anyone in the future who may refer to this question in our PAQ.  Thus, a win/win scenario.

Guidelines for giving grades can be found at https://www.experts-exchange.com/jsp/cmtyQuestAnswer.jsp#3

Thank you for your responsiveness here and I do hope this has been of help to you.  Expert input is always welcome as well, of course.

Thanks Moondancer
dew_associates -->  My pleasure, it is the right thing to do, since no response to my request to tell me the "B" was merited.

Grade changed.
