Need to Ghost (copy) a Win 2K dynamic system drive to larger disk

Our server needs more space on the system drive on a Windows 2000 server. Presently we have a 17 Gb SCSI drive mirrored and we are running out of space. We are running terminal server which is runs our main applications.

Anyway, I need to upgrade the main drive to a 70 Gb mirrored SCSI drive. The drive is a Windows 2K dynamic drive, and ghost doesnt really like it.

I have run ghost with the -ia switch, and done a partition to partition copy, to no avail. I have broken the mirror on the 17 Gb drive to make sure it copies safely, and have formated the 70 Gb drive as a basic drive.

I have put a partition on the 70 Gb drive first and done a partition to partition copy, no good. Removed the partition and tried to copy, no good.

Starting to get frustrated at Microshaft again for some reason. ?U:o)

I agree with Portang.
Also make sure you are using the enterprise version of ghost that works on servers. Check to make sure it supports dynamic disks.

One other thing.

Make an ERD floppy and update the repair info, and then copy the repair directory to a safe place.

I hope this helps !
pc_doc

1. Break the mirror

2. Do a full system backup of the system drive.

3. Add the 70G drive to the SCSI chain and format it NTFS while in Win2k.

4. Make the 70G the SCSI boot drive and restore the system normally.

5. Do a full system repair to correct the hives.

sorry i have not been able to get back here fellas, busy.

anyway portang, your suggestion was good, but not successful as when we rebooted finally on the 70 Gb drive, it thought it was still D: drive, so software would not work that needed to run on C: drive. put another drive in, windoze 2K would not let it be renamed to C: drive.

SysExpert. ghost 7 either PE or enterprise supports dynamic drives, but only with the -ia switch, and only doing partition to image to partition copy. Finally got pissed off enough to try this, and guess what.....
WINS was the first of many things to get stuffed up. Tried to reinstall 2K server over the top, sorry, but that didnt work either. kept falling over, and we need 110% uptime.

Dew Associates. Liked your idea, but somehow Windoze 2K keeps details of the drive params it is on if it is not mirrored, and doing a full system restore stuffed itself as well. Have sent a nice little message to Microshaft about that one, let me tell you.

Anyway fellas, finally solved the basis of the problem.
The SCSI controller that was installed in the machine by the company that was servicing the client up till May, was installed in April, but the bios on the RAID card was already 12 months out of date.

Updated the bios, broke the old mirror, remirrored the 17 Gb partition to the 70 Gb drive as a 17 Gb partition, formated the other 53 Gb as a partition linked to a directory on the C: drive, put the proprietry software for the company in that one (it had already chewed up nearly 15 Gb).

there fore it gave them 70 Gb drive, but with a seperate partition that would not get stuffed if a virus attacked the main partition.  Seems like an interesting idea.

Thanks for the suggestions anyway, and i hope we all helped each other.

By way of compensation, all ideas should have worked on normal Basic drives. so i will award 100 point to each

100 points to Portang
100 points to SysExpert
100 points to Dew_Associates

Thanks again
Thanks pc-doc!

Glad you worked this out. This one is a keeper!

Hi,

I am splitting the points here, as per pc_doc's comment of "10/23/2001 06:43AM PST".

100 points to Portang
100 points to SysExpert
100 points to Dew_Associates

Since Portang's comment was first here, I will award the 100 at this q, and post separate q's for SysExpert and Dew_associates, look for your q's in this topic area.

Thanks
