Major Problems with EXPLORER ERRORS

I have been having major, major problems with Explorer errors.  It used to be all Invalid page fault errors as the first explanation below outlines...but latelty it's also been stack fault dumps (second outline below).  They both occur in KRNL386.EXE or KRN32.DLL.  I have tried many things from reinstalling windows, to reinstalling explorer, installing different video updates, erasing various files and reinstalling them, doing disk clean-ups and updates, to chagning a hodge-podge of settings.  I don't know what to do since nothing has worked.  I have heard once or twice that more RAM may help but I don't want to spend the $$ unless I know it's going to work (even if RAM is cheap).  I have a PII 400 MHz system running Windows 98.  I use internet explorer 5.0 and this is when most of the errors occur, when I'm online in windows.  I also have in my system; a zip drive, CDR drive, DVD drive, 64 MB of SDRAM, and your regular 3.5 disk drive.  I run ATI/All-In-Wonder Pro on my system and there is a video camera with TV cable hooked in.  There are various other programs running and if there are anymore questions I would be happy to answer them.  Any solutions to this problem would be so awesome and I'm hoping the points available will generate some solutions that will actually work.  Thank you very much.

Whew!  So many possibilities.  I'd start here:  Start - Run - MSCONFIG - this is the way to check what startup files you have and quickly/easily uncheck items (autoexec.bat, config.sys, load=, run= in the INI file, start up programs, etc.  When troubleshooting is complete, you can recheck to reinitialize.

More about your setup would be beneficial.  What Motherboard and Bios info.  What ZIP DRIVE, how connected?  If Iomega, there was a known problem with DLL which caused me similar issues; what drive specifics?  Also if, say a Zip or Zip plus the Tools package needs update.

Start - Run - MSINFO32 - gives you much info about your setup, you can check IRQs/DMAs (as with Device Manager to zero in on problems and conflicts), and check the hardware area for Problem Devices.  Also under TOOLS, Dr. Watson can be invoked to start logging problems and help narrow down the applications or interfaces that are problems.  Also, SFC which helps search and validate system files, and advise you of changes/corruptions which you can replace/restore from original CD/disk.  Create Bootlog.txt by holding CTRL during boot until you get the menu to select the creation of this, which you can check with any text editor and search for Fail of failed to see what driver/load issues ocur.  Through this same process you can access MS Dos prompt only to try this from your Windows\command subdirectory - Scanreg/fix.  This will scan and fix registry problems.  Also from the menu you can select SAFE MODE, which I recommend to zero in on problem/duplicate entries and delete all occurrences.

Back to MSINFO32 - Tools, there you can also use registry checker, and DIRECTX Diagnostic tool, which checks for key information and advises you of what's missing, needed.  Recommend that highly.

More momentarily.
AllInWonder updated driver?  Curious also about what resolution settings you have for your graphics as well as color depth.

This is step-by-step I've found very helpful.

frustradman,
(1) Try to open the computer box, make certain all the cables connecting to all your drives are in good contact without any loose endings and/or half-inserted state or any reversed side (left/right or long end/short end etc...).

Inspect all the PCI cards and ram card are all inserted into the slot without any metal-parts (half plugged in) extruded out.

(2) Try to inspect the IDE controller, master and secondary.
Try to use primary IDE controller for all harddisks (Primary master and Primary slave).
Allocate and use the secondary IDE controller to hold your CDR/DVD (secondary master) and zip drive as (Secondary slave).  Enabled DMA controlled for your DVD in the device manager.

Try to make certain your IDE controller is the most update driver (especially if it supported UDMA-33 or UDMA-66) from the manufacturer of motherboard.
If the Primary master harddisk is UDMA-66 and the motherboard is also supported UDMA-66 with drivers of IDE controller. Use special UDMA-66 cable in connecting. If UDMA-66 cable is used, don't connect UDMA-33 or other non-UDMA drives connecting to the same chain of primary IDE controller.
------
If still got stuck, try to remove the zip drive from the computer and rebuild it again and reinstall win98 from the clean stata. Suspected your problem is the zip in conflicting with the IDE controller as the base memory address.

Let me know if it worked.         pslh

Okay I'll see what I can give you for more about my setup.  My Zip drive is the 100MB IDE Internal drive.  I have no idea where to check for motherboard and bios information.  I have the Zip tools disk from April 1997 - does that need updating.  Under my IRQ's IRQ shares Sound Blaster, Rage Pro Turbo, and Irq holder for PCI steering.  IRQ 14 and 15 both have IDE controllers and a PCI Bus Master IDE Controller each.  IRQ has two; USB Universil Host Controller and IRQ holder for PCI steering.  I really don't know what this means but keep asking for specific information that may help you find solutions for me.  I am starting to go down the list of suggestions now so I'll let you know when something works.  Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, the incorrect RagePro driver appears here ... just to make sure, most ATI software has diagnostic and detail info on their driver, check the ATITECH.COM site.

When your system first boots, you can see BIOS information appear on screen, holding PAUSE long enough to read is helpful, Pause again untoggles.  No motherboard documentation?  As your read the on-screen info, you'll notice also info on how to access your bios (sometimes holding the DEL), don't change anything there, if unclear, but wonder if this BIOS supports Plug and Play.  You've got a lot to check out, best of luck.

Bud's Win95 Win98 Tips and Troubleshooter
Frustrated, really two things to start with,

1. Remove the Zip Tools from the system, uninstall them completely and make sure that all traces are gone.

2. As for the ATI All-In-Wonder, when you install, adjust or remove the ATI All-In-Wonder or ATI All-In-Wonder Pro display adapter driver Windows 98 sometimes redetect the display adapter as an ATI Rage II+ display adapter.

This can occur if you are using an older version of the ATI All-In-Wonder or ATI All-In-Wonder Pro display adapter containing incorrect BIOS information. Make sure that the display adapter type is correctly shown in your display properties.
Dennis
After the above, then run through the following, in the order given please.

Have your Windows 98 CD Rom disk handy.

1. Insert your Windows 98 CD Rom disk into the drive.

2. Click Start, Run and type  SFC <OK>

3. This will start the System File Checker.

4. Click on the settings button and select “Check for changed and deleted files” and click OK to start.

5. Replace any files that are detected as bad or corrupt. Also watch the file dates and version numers carefully and always try and replace older files (pre-May 1998) with newer files and latest versions Later versions take preference over file dates. SFC will copy the old file to X:\Windows\Sysbckup in case you need it back.

6. When SFC is done, reboot the system and note the performance.

Next:

1. Reboot the system and either hold the Ctrl key down right after memory post or when you see the “Starting Windows…” dialogue, touch the F8 key.

2. Choose #5 Command (MSDOS)  Prompt only.

3. At the dos prompt, change directories to X:\Windows\Command, with “X” being the directory where Windows is installed.

4. Now type SCANREG/FIX <enter>

5. Follow the dialogue and let Scanreg review your registry and make any necessary repairs.

6. When Scanreg is done, reboot into Windows and test the system and let us know!
Dennis

There's lots and lots of software troubleshooting advice here, which is great.  But I have two main questions:

1) Do the error messages have any regularity to them?  What I mean is, do they always happen with IE5, or do they happen with different programs with different circumstances?

2) Have you tried a clean install of Windows, from scratch?  I ask, because if you tried a clean install of Windows (FDISK, FORMAT, WINDOWS SETUP) and you're still having problems, either you're having a major driver conflict, or it might be a hardware problem.

Bad memory can cause CRAZY crashes and other problems.  Also, an overheated processor can cause weird crashes, so check that out, too.

Odds are that it's not a hardware problem, but just something to keep in mind.

Well, frustratedman, we began about 12 hours ago, long on-line time and many fixes and possibilities posed.  Personally, find it key (important) to be methodical in troubleshooting process, sometimes skipping a step and/or changing the order of things has impact.  If you're running any Office 2000 packages, 800X600 is recommended; however, sometimes while in troubleshooting mode and changing to less than 256 color depth, causes yet other problems.   Time to get some off-line work done.

Listening for more.
frustratedman, your problem got solved or not?  pslh
I'd like to know where this stands as well.
I didn't go through all your comments because shortly after your suggestions I decided to turn off the taskbar autohide option.  This has seemed to stop almost all of the invalid page fault errors.  I have not got the onslaught of the errors since I turned off the option.  I also have downloaded the latest versions of the Zip software, ATI software for my ALL-in-One wonder Pro, and some Active X or DX software for graphics - not sure.  I appreciate all your help and will awards some points to some of you if you let me know how while at the same time not specifically giving your suggestions a grade - since I don't think any of them specifically solved my problem.  The main answer to this one was the auto hide taskbar option.  Let me know how I can give you points and I will distribute them among some of you.  Thank you again for all your trouble.

FrustratedMan
FM, decide how you want to handle the points and post that here. Based upon what you post, one of us will post an answer for acceptance and the distribute the points as you desire.
It would be nice to give astec, dew, pslh, and eniac each 250 pts. but whatever works.  Someone will get the points.

I agree that the issue has been resolved.  I misunderstood the request I received and I am really sorry about the problems that resulted from my understanding.

smeebud,
The wrapping problem is a real problem, I agree.  I saw a question yesterday where only the box with the long string was wide.  Has anyone else noticed that?

Linda
Linda, the wrapping problem I thought Clyde has noted at the community support during the discussion of the new look.

If there is any non-break (no space) sentence within the table of the new look which contains all the comments, the right margin of the new look will be pushed to the far right end of the page and it set as the new right margin.

Within this question, the width is caused by a non-break URL posted by astaec.

For the old look as you compared, the comment contain the nonbreak URL will extend to the right by itself only as all the comments are not contained within a table-setting.

I'm not sure Clyde is working on this or not!
pslh
We are aware of the problem and it is one of the issues that we are working on solving.

I saw one question where most of the boxes were normal width and the one with the long sentence was wider than the rest.  It does not seem to be working on this question though since your  comment is as wide as alll the others.

Linda
Didn't work on my comment either.  Wonder where I saw that question where the comment boxes were different lengths?  That's one of the things I've heard proposed as a solution and I thought it might be up.  Apparently not!
