Missing "mtrr.vxd" driver

I have been getting a boot-up error saying that a virtual driver "mtrr.vxd" (which may have something to do with directx) is missing.  Using DejaNews I discovered 226 people with the same problem.  The driver is NOT on my system's installation CD, and it is not on any program or game CD that I own.  What is it and where can I get it?

As a kludge, I copied one of the smaller VXDs to the name
"mtrr.vxd". I no longer get any boot-up errors and I don't detect any problems, but as I am having a near impossible time installing directx, I want to solve this (mtrr.vxd) problem first.

Thanks for suggesting that I remove it from the registry, I'll try it and see what happens.  I still don't know the purpose of the driver, and since over 150 people have posted an identical problem on newsgroups in the past few months, anyone with an answer will be quite a hero.
