Access violation at address 00000000

Access violation at address 00000000 violation of address 0000000 is the message I get when I try to open a file on a flash drive which is plugged into my USB port. How can I fix this?

NOTE:

I can copy the file and paste it onto my hard disk, but then when I try to open the fie, I still get the same message. The file in question DOES open on my other computer from the same flash disk.

Please help

What is the file type you are trying to open. I would first suggest uninstalling and then re-installing the program that is trying to open the file, or try opening it with an alternative program

Here is an update: I am using windows XP home, but a bootleg version. I cannot install ANY new programs, of any sort, from any source, because every time I try, when I click on the executable file I get the "access violation at address 74E4C4ES Read of Address 34E31238"  message. Please advise, thanks!

Memory problem or virus.

Get the UBCD http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Download links are the icons at the top of the page above Overview.  Browse the page and see what utils are there for you.  Check the memory utils especially.

Make the CD and boot from it.  Run the memory tester first - memtest -  and let it do two to three passes through your memory.  Memory could be the problem so get that test done first.

If memory tests OK then you are going to have to find a way to test for virus.  If it is a virus it may well have come from your flash drive.
ok thanks will do all that an advise
Actually my computer doesn't have a CD rom and I don't have an external one. Is there any online scan I could do instead?
