Extending Wireless Signal

I have a wireless router upstairs in my house that is connected to my cable modem.  I need to extend the wireless signal to the basement as the signal is weak that far away from the wireless router.   However, I can't run a Ethernet cable from the basement to the upstairs router so I am wondering what my options are?

Thanks!

I've tried various extenders for large homes, and this is by far the most reliable unit I've found:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122388

It's very simple to set up -- especially if your current router is a Netgear unit, but even if it's not it only takes a few minutes.     And you can move the extender unit to any plug in the house, so you can easily find the location that gives you the best signal for the distant end.
What about access points? You can pair them and will traverse longer distances.
