Print spooler keeps stopping

I have a 3rd party consultant that RDPs to one of our servers to process medicaid billing for us. The server runs  Server 2003 SP2. The remote user RDPs through a Cisco VPN client. For some reason, the print spooler on the server keeps stopping. The server has no local or network printers attached. The remote user has an HP laserjet P2035 printer. What can be causing this? Also, is there a way I can limit what the user is capable of doing through the RDP session? I think they have been trying things to resole the problem themselves when they shouldn't.

This sounds very much like a printer driver issue.  When users RDP to servers, the default action for the RDP Clients is to install their client printers on the server so that they can print to them from within RDP.  I suspect that this is causing your issue.

You can resolve this by restricting RDP connections and making it so that printer redirection is not done.

On the server, go to Start -> Administrative Tools -> Terminal Services Configuration
Double-click the RDP-Tcp connection type
Select the "Client Settings" tab
Check "Windows printer mapping" to disable it.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the useful tips. If I do this, will they still be able to print?
To their printers, yes as it will not appear in the RDP session.
Hmmm. Because they process medical billing, they need to be able to print from their RDP session. Would the print spooler on the server they are remoting to affect their printing?
