I think I would be inclined to accept the diagnostics, the physical symptoms, and back up my hard drive immediately. Then I would replace it.

The more it is powered-up the more likely there will be further damage. If there is any vital, unbacked-up data then consider slaving the drive to another machine so there is less drive activity while copying your data.<br />
If the data does not need recovery then treat the drive as faulty, dispose of it as you would normally and replace with new.<br />

Imaging is risky as if there are faulty areas on the drive these will be reproduced as missing data on the image.
