Having trouble writing to Dbms Output

I opened that window and clicked the + plus button to connect it to the workspace. Then I pasted a script which included the following line, but created no output.

DBMS_OUTPUT.put_line('totalRecs:'||totalRecs);

Please provide me a simple script which works for you?
