I have over 30 years in the IT industry. During this time I have worked with a variety of products in a variety of industries.
This tutorial will walk an individual through the process of installing of Data Protection Manager on a server running Windows Server 2012 R2, including the prerequisites.

Video Steps

1. Microsoft .Net 3.5 is required. To install this feature, go to Server Manager, and select Add Roles and Features either from the home screen or click Manage and select the option.

2. Click Next, accepting all defaults until the Feature selection pane is displayed.

3. Select the Disks tab, then the Add option in the far right panel.

4. Place a check in the box next the .Net Framework 3.5 Features and click Next.

5. Notice there is an error at the top of the screen about specifying an additional source file. This is because the files to install this feature are not installed by default when the operating system is installed. The files should be located on the operating system installation media under “\sources\sxs”. Locate this path, then click Specify an alternate source path at the bottom of the screen and place the path in the provided box. Then, click Install.

6. Next, ensure the installation DVD is in the drive and either allow auto start to run, or select setup.exe from the provided message

7. On the main screen, select Install Data Protection Manager (alternatively, you could select Review System Requirements to check your system)

8. Accept the license agreement and click OK

9. Microsoft Visual VC++2008 Redistributable will install (see note at bottom if you would like to preinstall it)

10. Select Next on the setup wizard screen

11. The installer performs a prerequisite check to determine if all necessary applications have been installed. The most likely needed software not installed here is the SIS (Single Instance Store), you can select to have it installed during the installation process. However, this has a history of failing, so see the note below about installing it manually.

12. Enter a username and company name. Click Next.

13. Create a password for the SQL service that runs. Ensure this meets complex, secure password requirements. Click Next.

14. Select whether or not to allow automatic Microsoft updates. Click Next.

15. Select whether or not to send anonymous information to Microsoft for product improvements. Click Next.

16. Review the summary page. If all of the information is correct, click Install.

17. Verify that the installation completed successfully. Review the install report if desired.

18. NOTE: To install the Visual C++2008 Redistributable, run the executable located on the installation media: <Root Drive>\redist\vcredist\vcredist_x64.exe To install the Single Instance Store (SIS), launch PowerShell To install the Visual C++2008 Redistributable, run the executable located on the installation media: <Root Drive>\redist\vcredist\vcredist_x64.exe To install the Single Instance Store (SIS), launch PowerShellTo install the Visual C++2008 Redistributable, run the executable located on the installation media: <Root Drive>\redist\vcredist\vcredist_x64.exe To install the Single Instance Store (SIS), launch PowerShell and change the path to:<Root Drive>\DPM2010\Setup\redist (I have seen this path state 2010 even on DPM 2012 installation media). and change the path to:<Root Drive>\DPM2010\Setup\redist (I have seen this path state 2010 even on DPM 2012 installation media). Once here, type the following command: Once here, type the following command: dism /online /enable-feature:SIS-Limited (requires a reboot).
