win2k pro crashes when modifying security settings for share

For the past few months, I've been experiencing an increasingly frustrating problem when attempting to set permissions for network shares on my home computer running windows 2000 professional. Here's the sequence of events:

1) drill down from "my computer" to get to the folder I want to share

2) right-click the folder, choose "sharing", select "share this folder", and click the "security" tab.

3) click "add" to add a user to the list of users authorized to access the share

4) Program Error -- Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be shut down. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created

The most frustrating thing so far is the fact that I can't even view the error log (I searched for files named *.log and sorted them by time. None of the logfiles that were modified during the relevant window of time can be viewed because of sharing violations.) The logs in Event Viewer themselves were silent and didn't indicate that anything unusual had happened.

I suspect that there might be registry corruption with the user data that could be solved by deleting a few chunks of it to eliminate the corrupted user data, but I don't want to delete stuff without narrowing it down as much as possible first.

For the record, I have all of the latest patches from Windows Update applied, including SP1. This problem pre-dates SP1 and all of the updates, and doesn't seem to have been affected by any of them. It started happening shortly after I installed Win2k back when it first came out and doesn't seem to have been affected by any of the patches that have been applied. It was a clean installation onto a bare hard drive.

I guess a secondary question might be, "is there any way to tell Win2k to just say, 'screw it' and let me view a read-only snapshot of the open logfiles, even if it is a sharing violation -- knowing that the file might very well have changed since I began reading it, but allowing me to accept that risk and read it anyway?"

Log files can also have a txt ending, but if they are in the event log, you need the event viewer. Also if it crashes just as the log is created, you probably will not be able to see it.

My first sugggestion would be to create the ERD floppy(ies) ( see the Help optn - search for ERD ).
Then I would boot from the win2k CD and run the repair options for the registry and system files.
I hope this helps !

I'll keep your suggestion in mind, but I'd prefer to wait a little longer to see whether somebody else knows how to actually fix it without starting over and reinstalling windows...
I don't know if this can solve your problem but open a cmd promp and then type SFC, This is the System Files Checker this tool check your system files.

Greetings.

This question remains open today; perhaps just overlooked this or it just got lost in the volumes. If you've been helped to resolve this, please accept the comment which helped you as the accepted answer to then grade and close so that others may benefit from this information as it migrates to our PAQ Database. If more is needed, please update here via comments so that you can achieve your goal.

Your attention to finalizing this is very much appreciated.

Thank you.

P.S.  You'll note that on some of these older questions, the comments are not in their correct date order. Engineering has been advised.
Unfortunately, none of the answers really solved the problem -- how to fix the issue WITHOUT re-installing windows. I was hopeful about SFC, but SFC found nothing wrong. Ultimately, I bought a new computer and re-installed Win2k last month, so the issue is now moot.

And so ends another EE saga whereupon a hard question with no real solution becomes moot and falls onto the pavement like a dead fish, since awarding points and accepting an answer is an all-or-nothing proposition (vs declaring the question moot and distributing half the points among respondents who gave useful suggestions as a consolation prize).
Not quite !

To distribute points you can accept a comment as an answer or

You can open up new questions with points for each expert with a subject like " For xxxnname" for help with...
, and notify the experts here of what you did and perhaps even provide the links,

or

You can put in a request to
https://www.experts-exchange.com/jsp/qList.jsp?ta=commspt
to distribute the points in any manner you think is proper.
This is especially true when you think you have received good information from more than one person.

     I hope this helps !
Hello, cnetjeff.  I'd like to add a recommendation that may well have helped you get an excellent solution here and that is to remain active within your open question and provide ongoing feedback for recommendations made as they are added.  That ensures that the question remains in the foreground and the collaboration continues until reaches a successful conclusion.  A follow up request was sent for feedback in May, and no response from you until two months later.  That makes it tough to help you complete the troubleshooting process.

At any rate, thanks for posting your solution, and willingness to award experts for their contributions.   There were four experts who contributed here, I will change this question value to 50 points, the remaining 150 are refunded to your account so you can post the new questions in this topic area for each of the other experts you wish to award and include the link to this question as a crossfoot.

If more is needed, please comment, I'll respond.
