Free Space on Hard-disk

I have an old PC with Pentium 120, 1.2 GB Seagate Hard-drive and i430vx motherboard, Win95. Recently, I noticed a surprising thing happening. When I check at the MS Dos Prompt for the free space avaliable on my hdd it shows about 75 MB. When I try to get it from the properties of the drive in Windows, it shows 41 MB.

When I connect the same hard-disk to a newer PC in my office, it shows 540 mb free. !!!.

Will I have to update the BIOS, Win95 etc.

Thanks.
Advait.

The best thing to do is update 95 to 98.  That way you will have support for the full disk.  You could also use an overlay to overcome these problems.
say frankly i still a begineer in computer stuff but click this links

hope this can help you
Is there a 1,2 gig limit in any BIOS? I'd suggest creating a bootable floppy with fdisk on. Boot from this and run fdisk. View partition info. Do you get any surprises from this? Check if all space is partitioned and accounted for, and the size is consistent with BIOS values (and drive type...). How much free space is reported with "dir"? Run Scandisk in safe mode and defrag the drive.

The fact that the drive is shown to have much more free space when tried in another computer is a bit funny. Even if this were a case of BIOS not recognizing the whole drive, this shouldn't happen - the unrecognized part could not have been partitioned and consequently could not be recognized as usable, free space by another computer; not on the same logical drive, anyway.

ASKER

i AM SORRY FRIENDS BUT IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO UPGRADE TO WIN9. OTHER OPTIONS ARE TO BE TRIED YET BUT I DO NOT THINK THEY WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I WILL TRY AND LET YOU KNOW.

THANKS

Geez, what happened? Keyboard damage? :)
Is the HD an original component? If so it should well be recognized to its full size without any additional fixes or updates.

I ran across a system that would not recognize a 1.2G hard drive even though the BIOS did.  FDISK would only see it as 400+.  I applied an overlay program and all worked well.
beforee you go upgrading etc........simply run scandisk......

Is your drive compressed?
Proposed answer rejected.

You should only leave your remarks in the form of an Answer when you are absolutely, 100 per cent certain that your suggestion is the ONLY perfect solution to the problem posed by the Asker.

Experts Exchange is a collaborative site, and when you "Answer", as opposed to "Comment", you lock the question and remove it from the easily seen open questions. That inhibits the collaborative process.

Further, you'll notice that rejected Answers are distinguished by a bright red banner. Personally, that makes me feel about two inches tall...<grin>

Animal is way on the right track. Your OS lets you see what it thinks to be true. running scandisk will let you know  that the FAT size is being dispayed wrong and if you would like to correct this problem.

Try it and give some input. give the points to someone or delete your question.
