Adobe Reader 6.0 won't go past splash logo page

Hello, Please help...When I try to open adobe 6.0 reader it opens to the splash screen but has a gray box over it with an X in the upper right cornerto close it.
I click on this and sometimes I have to click several times to close the box and then the logo page will not always open and even when it does it then locks up on the program page and I have to do the cntrl- alt -delete bit to get out of it. I thought maybe AOL had something to do with it but I contacted them and we went thru the clean internet files and install adapter and repair internet explorer files etc. and Adobe still doesn''t work . I had Adobe Acrobat 5.1 reader on it and it worked fine but when I downloaded upgrade from website to 6.0 its beserk!!!
I have some documents I need to view and print.
