magic bullet for PCtel V.90 HSP56MR connecting to Cisco AS5300

Customer with a PCtel.....V.90 HSP56MR in his laptop getting slow connection speeds.  Solid connection, but running several toast.net checks shows him constantly below the acceptable range.  We have had him connect to ATT for dialup to test the speed, and the results were significantly better, as such suspect it is the relationship between the modem and the NAS we are using.

Any recommendations or driver versions or anything apprecaited.

What OS?
Did you check connection speed at his main location or only at your location? there may be big difference in line noise causing slow connection speeds.
Did you check for newer or updated driver for the modem?

Can you try a different computer that is known to connect at faster speeds to connect to his ISP and see if it is the ISP that is the problem or maybe a hardware or setup issue with the laptop? Of course you need to check from same location so you are using the same line.

Customer took laptop into vendor who tested both our connection and a connection to AT&T...  noticeable difference, still slow for us.  So customer is showing slow connection from both locations for that laptop/modem but only to our NAS.  As such we suspect a compatibility issue between the modems rather than a line issue or other common interference related issues.
Is this modem built in or a PCMCIA card?
And what was the OS? kinda hard to seek new driver without knowing what OS it is needed for.
If built-in then who is the vendor and what is the make and model number of the laptop?

Please try to give us as much info as you can, this will keep us from needing to ask so many questions just to find out what your setup really is.

Notice you still haven't even given a much needed info such as what the OS is.

What is the Operating System for the laptop?
What is the make and model number of the laptop?
We need details.  Are you attempting to upload or download?  Downloads of 50K are about what to expect from an ISP.  Uploads from a modem top out at about 33.6.  You can't get any better than that if you don't have the proper hardware diretly connected to a t1.

again, this is a client modem connecting to our Cisco AS5300 NAS...  and unfortunately the client is "incapable" of providing further information that what was provided, and has given up I believe.

I don't want to abandon the question, but am afraid that no further information is forthcoming from the client end.

AMMENDED ANSWER (apologies)

Why the secrecy over your OS??????

PC-TEL is a supplier of modem chipsets not modems!

Modem info:
Soft V.90 MR (Modem Riser - Embedded)
    Soft Linux- or Windows-hosted V.90 AC97 2.1-compatible chipset**
       Chipset refs: Pctel 303A
                          Pctel 303L
                          Pctel 303W

known conflicts:
Some problems reported with some Cable companies in the UK due to the lower line-voltages employed compared with BT lines.

Can I suggest that although V90 drivers would be a better choice for consistency in operation that you firstly try asking the telephony provider to tweak the gain on your line?
                             ----------------------

**   A soft Linux- or Windows-only Riser card that supports V.90. Utilises an AC-link (AC97 2.1 compatible) AMR, CNR or MDC slot on appropriate motherboards to use the motherboard's DSP (Digital Signal Processer) chip.
Because the driver depends upon support from the motherboard, drivers are usually unique to specific motherboard chipsets.

HTH

Peace
again...  We are the ISP, not the owner or the latop/modem.  What information was available from the client has been given, and no more has been provided (client no longer with us).
daveaths
We tried in good faith to help you and you failed to provide us with any info that would have helped us get closer to solving the problem. I feel you wanted us to fail since you couldn't figure it out then you didn't want anyone else to do it either.
Split the points amoung the ones who was trying to help, not our fault you wouldn't provide any useful info to allow us to help any furthur.
:>)
I don't know any other way to say this ray...
"you failed to provide us", "you wanted us to fail...", "you wouldn't provide us any useful information"
all this implies some lack of concern or motivation on my part, which i have tried time and time again to explain.

We are an ISP, I can give you all the information you want on our equipment, however, I can only give you the information that the client gives us regarding their modem, OS, hardware, driver version, etc...

The client has not been forthcoming with any information, and is no longer even seeking to resolve the issue since our requests for specific information (from back at the beginning of this thread).  You imply that I am looking to see failure for some sort of personal gratification since I couldn't solve it, because I won't give further information.  Again, I don't have further information to give as per my post of 02/16/2004.

The initial post was made with the information available at hte time in the interest of a quick fix or init string based on the information available.  Obviously this was not available given the limited information provided by our customer.  This I understand, and have repeatedly tried to make clear.

I have no problem distributing the points (premium service user, so its not like I'm wasting them), but at the same time I don't want to leave this thread listed as a success/answer and have others wasting their time reading a failure due to lack of information.
I think I'm getting a little confused here, can someone state in simple terms for an idiot like myself exactly what information is wanted for what?

Bottom line...  initialy posted a question with the preliminary information I had from a customer...  the customer gave up and went elsewhere, as such i don't have any further information and frankly don't need the solution for this particular problem any more, not for people not trying, but for lack of information or interest from the client who precipitated the posting.

Let's check this users history.
Questions Asked        13

So out of 13 questions asked so far he deletes only 2  let's see that is about 15% deletion record.
Looks like someone that needs put on the "ignore list" since it seems they really don't appreciate our "free" help.
:>)

which is something I don't want to do (delete that is) since it IS unfair to those who tried to help.  What is needed is to distribute points, but not record this as a solved, because it doen't provide any useful information to anyone else looking for this type of issue.

also, holding the 1 delete against is unfair, it was deleted less than 5 min after posting and prior to anyone else posting, to move it to a more appropriate category.

Jeez Ray, you in a bad mood or what? Leave the dood alone

- The customer is always right remember... ('cept this customers, customer)

So Daveaths, may we take it that you don't want anymore effort wasted on this Q?
not sice I have nothing of value to contribute towards getting it resolved, and the source of the question no longer exists to provide information reqiured to resolve it.

would like to see points distributed, but again, do not want this to be listed as a solution and others to read through looking for a solution, which there is none, despite all of our best efforts
How thoughtfull of you, suggest you go to the Community Support area and explain your reasoning and ask nicely for a Delete/Refund on this question as the Experts failed to give an adequate answer
request made to close and distribute points wihtout accepting an answer

Well this thread did not help me much...

I would like to take a sec to vent.  PCTEL AMR MODEMS SUCK!!!

My advice is to stay away from these HSP56MR modems or anything similar to them.  Mine has the chipset Pctel 303A / Pctel 303L and I cant connect beyond 16 kbps and average out at 4.8 (is that even a possible connection speed?)  If i manage to connect at all I usually get dropped after 5 min.  From what I can tell Central America was flooded with these modems.  The drivers are almost impossible to find.

Our ISP, RACSA is usually the culpret but this time I thinks its the Modem.  PCTEL is no longer in the business.  Why do hardware / chip manufctuers web sites always suck?  Do they think I want to download FLash at 4.6 k to be able to navigate thier site to only find they no longer have drivers for download???

You can find a driver at  (seems they bought the modem chip set division of PCTEL, fools)  - They dont work well for me under win 2000.

Anyone able to find drivers from Pine Group for these chip sets is a magician.
Sorry i forgot to paste in the link where you can find some drivers for these things...
