Resetting IRQ's for the complete novice

after installing a new motherboard the onboard sound card failed to be detected & assigned an irq number. I attempted to fix this following the onscreen prompts. After selecting the IRQ number & restarting the computer I have no signal sent to my monitor. there is a signal at initial start up but when windows opens the screen remains blank. I realise I must have caused a conflict within the hardware & would like to know how I can reset the IRQ's without having to a)spend too much money on a callout service b)reformat hard drive or flash the bios?

By the way, if you are a complete novice maybe you should take this to a computer shop to have it done.  It will cost much less to pay a one-time service call than to replace a dead computer.
You should also not post four copies of the same question.
Try this, remove your sound card, get your system back up and running. Next check your soundcard for jumpers. You may have to manually set your IRQ to work on your PC. Now all PC's have 14 IRQ's, however, many of those are unusable. I dont recommend using IRQ 11 since that is usually your video card IRQ. Check your system in the device manager to see what is free. If you find an unused IRQ, set your soundcard to that # (maybe 9 or 12) then reinsert the soundcard.
If your soundcard has no jumpers, that is good too, but check to make sure you have free IRQ's on your system. If your using a USB Mouse, or USB Printer, disable the PS/2 and Parallel ports in your BIOS, that should free IRQ 7 or IRQ 12. THen insert your soundcard and let windows auto-assign the IRQ from its free resources to your soundcard. Hope that helps.

If you only need to reset your PCI-related IRQs, you can look for a setting in the CMOS that says "reset ESCD" or similar.  This setting will usually only have "yes" and "no" as possible settings, and will be set back to "no" if you reboot and go back to it.  To enter the CMOS settings, you usually hit a key during the memory count, such as delete, ESC, F1, F2, or F10.
After entering the bios, you could also select "restore defaults".
Metallimirk is on the right track but it sounds to me like you set your resources in Windows.  If you did do this, then resetting you BIOS will do nothing.  Try this:

Remove all your daughter boards except video, try to boot up.  If it doesn't boot (The only reason this should happen is if you are sharing resourses with an onboard component), then you need to boot into safe mode (Press F8 before the Windows start up screen and choose safe mode) and reset your resources for each device to auto.

Now restart your computer, if it starts properly then begin adding your other daughter boards in priority order.

Sound
Modem
NIC
Extension (USB or firewire)
All the rest

If you get a conflict then yoou will know where you problem is.  Go to the Device Manager and look at the properties of the device conflict, Windows will disable the device.  You should see the IRQ that you are conflicting with.

Now I need more information to help you, but you need to view your IRQs, this is done in Windows 9x by selecting the properties of the computer, XP by choosing to view the devices by resouces by connection, IRQ.

At this point you should see the list of IRQs and what is connecte to what.  You should be able to also identify the conflictand what is conflicting.

Now, to fix the problem, you need to identify if the conflicting device is removable and is it plug and play or not.  Also some motherboards are notorious for sharing IRQs between PCI slots, so moving the card to a differentt PCI slot will help.

I really need to know what OS you are running and what motherboard you have.

if its an onboard sound card how can he remove it!? Chisel and hammer?

If u dont know what jumper you need to short, just take the battey out for a few mins.
morpheus is laughing at us now.  We are responding to a dead question!!
It appears this question has been abandoned. I will make a recommendation to the moderators on its resolution in one  week. I appreciate any comments that would help me to make a recommendation.

In the absence of responses, I may recommend DELETE unless it is clear to me that it has value as a PAQ.

Thanks,
