M volume dismounted

Hello,

I am running a windows 2000 Domain Controller server with Small Business Administrator with Norton that gets updated daily and all the latest service packs.  Everything has been fine for quite some time until this morning.  None of the client stations could connec to the server and after doing some investigating I have found that the M volume is gone.

I did not set the server up and I do not know a whole lot about Exchange...but proably the basics.

My last backup of the mbx folder was about a month ago, so I really want to recover this data if possible.  Everything else in the server looks fine.  Nothing else looks missing or even hacked.  Event logs just show that when it trys to add virtual root Exadmin that it cant find the path specified...and a few other errors of that nature.

I am not sure how to proceed in fixing this or how to get the data back.

Any ideas on what may have happened?  What should be my first steps?

Any help here is appreciated.

Thanks!!

Ok, I just edited my question...sorry if anyone started.
open up services and make sure the automatic services for all exchange services are running.  open exchange system manager, make sure your storage group is online.  checkback when finished.
Ok, all services that need to be running appear to be fine.

However, in system manager I located the "First Storage Group" and listed is "Mailbox store" and "Public Folder Store".  Both are marked red for what I am assuming is that they are offline.  If i right click and go to Properties I have the option to "mount store".  However, I did nothing since I do not know that much about what I am doing.  What should be my next step?

Thanks!
are they online now? if they are close outlook and then reopen.

also, check the application event log for errors.
Ok, I just tried mounting them.  HOwever, it gives the following error:

An internal processing erro has occurred.  Try restarting the Exchange System Manager or the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, or both.

Id no: c1041724
Exchange System Manager

I went back and looked at my services running, but I am not sure which service I should try to restart.  I do not see any services labled "Exchange System Manager" or "Microsoft Exchange Information Store".  Is there some other place these are besidesthe "services" under administrative tools?

Bear with me here.  Thanks!
they must be there.  you cannot delete services, and these services are required. unless you are running a cluster, this is the only place where are located. when you go to services, make sure you list the items by name.
also, reboot the server. this will automatically try to restart the services.
I have rebooted the server all ready.

NOTE: I poked around under the small business administrator console and clicked on the "servers" drop down, then click "properties" on my server.  I then clicked on the "monitoring" tab.  It shows that the "Default Microsoft Exchange Services" is "stopped".  I clicked on details and it shows all services are running except "MTA Stacks".

I went back under services, and clicked "name" to make sure they are sorted by name.  I found the "mta Stacks" service and started it.  I guess i missed that last time, sorry about that.

Also, I must be blind in my haste :)  I found "Microsoft Exchange Information Store" service and restarted it.

Here is the status of all services that I see running dealing with exchange.
Assume all of these start with "Microsoft Exchange":
- System Attendant (started)
- Site Replication Service (disabled)
- Routing Engine (started)
- pop3 (started) (I am not using pop 3, i just recently started it just in case)
- Mta stacks (started)
- Information Store (started)
- IMAP4 (disabled)
- Exchange Event (its on manual, so I started it)

I then closed the system manager, restarted the info store service...then tried to mount the drive again.  Same error.

What do you advise from here?

Thanks,
Ryan
could be a problem with the integrity of the mail store.  you can run a tool called isinteg. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];182081
Ok, I restarted and checked over everything.  Same problem.

I tried running the isinteg tool as shown, but I am having trouble with it.

Here is what I am putting in:
isinteg -s onlinetools -fix -test alltests

Then it shows me all the switches and name of the program, but does not appear to run.

I also tried changing the name of the test to something like "allacltests"  but same thing.

Any ideas?
never mind.  I got it going.  Had a space between "- fix"
Ok, got it running....I have 2 options.  Either option I pick, after selecting "y" it then says "Isinteg cannot initiate verification process.  Please review the log file for more information"

Not sure where the log file is generated.  Im researching this error but Have not found to much.

Any ideas?
make sure the store is off line before it is run.

ughhhhh - Too late now.  Its running.

HOwever, I did take copy of the database files before running.  So if eseutil looses all kinds of data, could I just delete them and copy my backup in there place and be back to square 1?

Thanks
I believe so, yes.  If you end up doing that, then I would run eseutil /g, which will check the integrity of the database (without making changes), and I would also look in your event logs for any 1018, 1019 or 1022 errors.  Those all indicate database corruption.  If you see those errors, post back and I'll include a link that explains more about them.  If your database is actually corrupt, 99% of the time, it is due to hardware problems.  The reason that I say that is even if you fix the corruption now, if the problem turns out to be hardware, the corruption will return sooner or later (most likely sooner rather than later).

Ben
Ok, I belive i can run the /g scan on my backup so I can answer that question now.  However, my current /p scan is still running and is reparing tables. :(

I checked the event manager, and I do not have any of the errors you specified.  I looked under system and application....since you mentioned hardware...i am not quite sure if that is the right place.

What are your thoughts from here?

Thanks!
Also, I have plenty of free Hard Drive space but my  priv1.edb file is 2.62gigs.   Dont know if that might have something to do with it.
Ok,  on my backup files I ran /g on pupb1.edb and priv1.edb and it says:

"The database is inconsistent.  There may be uncommited logfiles.  Operation terminated with error -1811"

The p operation is still running.

Any advice from here?
Ok, good news :)

I ran eseutil /p on the pub and priv .edb files.  I moved them out of the directory and deleted all files out of the mdbdata folder.  I then forced exchange to create new databases.  Then I renamed those to old, then moved my orginal pub and priv files to the folder and tried to mount them and it worked!  Got everything backup and I do not seem to have any noticeable data loss.  All contacts, calendars and important e-mails are there.  I am currently running a backup on the information store with the Windows 2000 backup utility.

I suppose the next best thing to do is to export the data from this database and reimport it in a new clean database?

I think I know how to do this with the ExMerge utility.  If i run into trouble Ill start another thread.  Thanks for all of your help.  I have learned a ton about exchange and how it works now!

Please list any other tips or things I should look at in my current situation.

Thanks again!
glad to hear you are on the right track.  a good tip would be to increase your full backups of the databases. if possible, run nightly full backups.
Now I am having another problem erghhh h:(  Since I think its a separte issue I started it on a new link.  Any help would be very much appreciated!!
