conflict between my wire less and normal network cards that are both automatically obtaining ip's... how do i stop this conflict?

i have recentley purchased a network adapter for a playstation 2. i have got a router on my broadband connection that is wireless to a computer in another room, which is linked to its wireless network card. i have also got another network card in the back of my computer, which i have connected the ps2 to using a crosswire cable. the problem is, is that because both of the network cards are automatically obtaining ip addresses, when i choose to enable internet sharing on the wirless or the normal network card, it says that there is a conflict between them. i am currentley running microsoft windows xp professional. can someone please help me, i have tried every possible way that i can think of.

it seems that your PC has been assigned the same IPs for wireless and wired connection. it is because of your little bit strange network topology, hehe. :)

what kind of router do you have? it even has NO wired ethernet interface? it is recommended that you connect your PS2 to the router directly, of course, if it is possible.

if you have to keep such a topology (you have TWO subnets for such a simple home network) you may try change the IP address of your router's local address and the IP of your wireless connection to others, for example, 172.16.1.1 and 172.16.1.2.

hope it helps,
bbao
You need to put network cards on different subnets. On the router side, leave it the way it is, since addresses are probably set by the DHCP of the router. But on the 2nd PC subnet, which device will allocate the IP adresses? Have you setup
****, hit the submit with the left hand (bloody trackpad)...
... continued.
...a DHCP on the 2nd subnet?
If yes, set its subnet to be different from the 1st one; if not, use manual addressing on this subnet, and make sure it is coherent:
Subnet on router side is probably 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x leave that
Subnet on 2nd PC side: use 192.168.2.x mask 255.255.255.0.
If that 2nd PC needs internet, set its gateway=address of the 1st PC on its side.
Are you familiar with this, or shall I more precise?
could u tell me how to set up all of these masks etc and it isnt a second pc its a playstation 2 that i want to use network play on over the internet. my router is some netgear one its a 56 or 52 mbps. and my netwqork card recieving the signal is a sitecom wireless pci card. the other lan port in the back of my pc is connected to the network adaptor in the back of my playstation 2. there is no possible chance of me connecting my router directley to the playstation 2
i think the conflicting addresses may be 192.168.0.1.
the netgear should be that kind which supports 802.11g (54mbps), it might have 4 switch ports at the rear, why dont you just connect your PS2 to the netgear directly? this should be the easiest way.
yeh thats the one 802.11g the one wiv the aeriel and 4 ports on the back of it. i cant connect directly thats why i had the wireless in the first place
ok, go to the configuration console of netgear, change its local IP to 172.16.1.1 with mask 255.255.255.0, keep others unchanged, that should be ok. its default DHCP settings should automatically change to assign 172.16.1.x addresses, so your computer can obtain an IP such as 172.16.1.2. simply reboot the computer to refresh for new IP.
I can drive you to setup an address manually on the second network card of yr PC, but I have absoluteley no idea for a playstation since I hate these toys (not the people using it!).
Presumably, this is a consumer device, and must be DHCP compatible, so yr pb is only because yr subnet is not properly set on the card where the ps2 is connected, it must be different from the wireless side.
bbao is suggesting to change the subnet on wireless side, which does the same, but I am not sure routing will work if the mask is set to 255.255.255.0 and subnets are in a different class.
To make sure the new subnet you need is correct, check what you have now:
open a shell window:
start/run/cmd.exe
type:
ipconfig /all
and dump that here so we tell you what you exactly need to do

bbao,
if the subnet on ps2 side is 192.168.1.x / 255.255.255.0 for instance, it won't route, agreed?
unless you know the default subnet used by DHCP in XP connection sharing? I am not using it...
im not using internet connection sharing... im not sure why but there is a reason i didnt use it... could you tell me like step by step... i need the addresses for the dhcp etc because the playstation needs them. can u talk me through it pls
ok, but I still need you to dump the info about the existing cfg as requested above for me to tell you what to do, taking into account the stuff which works.
> if the subnet on ps2 side is 192.168.1.x / 255.255.255.0 for instance, it won't route, agreed?

1. if the XP's ICS is enabled, no need to enable routing between 172.17.1.x and 192.168.0.x subnets, the XP will act as a DHCP server for PS2 and assign itself with 192.168.0.1.

2. if the XP's ICS is NOT enabled, you may consider to enable routing between 172.17.1.x and 192.168.0.x subnets, but since XP has NO dhcp enabled, so you have to manually assign PS2 an IP. as for how to enable XP's IP routing, see the following:

How to Enable TCP/IP Forwarding in Windows XP

hope it helps,
bbao
bbao,
According to what he said, he does not have ICS 'on' on the XP machine, so he effectiveley needs to activate DHCP server service, and set IP routing 'on' since the ps2 cosnsole is DCHP client only, no way to set it up manually (from what I caught).
lesouef, i am afraid that XP can not act as a DHCP server except that ICS has been enabled, right? :)
if you say so... I am not using Xp at all, only 2000, but that's right, there is no built in DHCP server for client versions, only 2000server has it, so XP must be missing it as well.
So the easiest is probably to activate ICS for him, since that does everytjung he needs.
right. :)
Don't agree. Looks obvious to me that at least bbao got it right...
just listen what other experts say. ;)
if so, all the abandoned questions should be deleted directly, no need to have the PAQed or Force-Accepted options, because only the authors can determine if it is right? hehe. ;) cheers,
I'll play the witness role then! Give bbao the points!
Sorry, can't catch this one, I'm not english native speaking, and don't know what GRIN is...
amen is OK! we (they actually, because the priest has not seen me for ages!) use it also. I thought that was a latin word... and I also have a translation for grin (grimace, moue), but since I am not a fan of smileys, etc... I was miles away from thinking you were asking for such an acknowledge.
so here it is:
:D
haha! (y)

thank you lesouef, for your frankness and passion. i enjoyed the time with you. :)
thank you bob, for your humor and effort on Qs cleanup, and especially for your explanations about "amen" and "GRIN". i am also not a native english speaker, and like to learn more in english. :)

ok folks, i would like to suggest sharing the points between lesouef and me, because he really contributed a lot too. OK? ;)

cheers,
bbao
This becomes so polite, I think we're ready to enter politics very soon.
bbao, which country are you from? do you have elections soon?
thelearnedone is probably american due to his answering hours, but I think its a bit late for the next vote...
hi lesouef, i am from china, we have no elections here this year, hehe. :) where are you from? ;)
France (gmt +2 at the moment), no election either until 2007...
really? the French Culture Year just started in china, the team of Patrouille de France is still traveling in china. ;) btw, i just watched the story of Louis de Funes in the TV, he was great.
I know, Chirac is on holidays again!, he loves shaking hands all over the world. Would be funny if it was not with our money! I am not sure Louis de Funes is the best ambassor for us! A bit old fashionned now that stuff...
hehe, Louis de Funes is very famous in china, although most of the people dont know his name at all... ;))
ok, if you like him, the reference film is "Le corniaud" with another hero, Bourvil, especially the beginning of the movie when de Funes's american car crashes Bourvil's 2CV; the dialog is absolutely great; no idea if this can be restored properly after translation...
his reference film, in china, should be "La Grande Vadrouille", a very old film produced in 1966. most chinese people started to know him from this film, the dialog had been completely translated into chinese, so Louis de Funes speaks unadulterated mandarin in the film, haha :-D
true, this one is the most famous, but not the best to me, its dialogs are not as good, but of course I doubt this can be restored 100%in chinese, though the most famous french cartoon (Asterix) is very well rendered in english, the only language I can judge.
yeah, it is not easy to completely keep its oringinal meaning when we tanslate a language and even culture into another, especially for the western culture and eastern culture, which are quite different to most people in the world.

btw, it seems we have been deviating from the subject, from ICS to cleanup, then to france and de Funes, haha... :-D
thelearnedOne's fault, we're waiting for the judge decision! and he must be still in bed...
