External redirect contact with exchagne 2003 fails with permission denied message.

Hi
I have set up a external redirect on AD to foward emails to my xternal email address by creating a new contact in AD with my external email address as the SMTP address. This works fine from inside our network but as soon as an email is recieved from an email address from outside our network it is failed to be delivered to the new exteranl contact with the external email address. Message is "Undeliverable: Following Our Conversation-  Version One Seminar Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.  "You do not have permission to send to this recipient.  For assistance, contact your system administrator."  5.7.1."  Our details are Exchange 2003 , Win Server 2003 std SP2.

Note: i have also tried to set up a redirect from inside Outlook 2007 and tried it that way with the same result.

Thanks for your help.

Do you send email directly or via your ISPs SMTP server?
Automatic forwarding is prone to problems with antispam filtering as it can be seen as spoofing.

If you receive the NDR from your server then it is being rejected by the next step.
As you are using Message Labs they are probably rejecting the message because it appears to come "from" a domain that they don't know about as belonging to one of their customers.

Hi Simon

I have resolved this problem.

Problem: We have a SMTP mail connector that allows the blocking of some users for external mail and this was causing a problem with the redirection of the mail to the external contact.

Resolution: I have created a new SMTP mail connector that allows mail being sent to the domain of the external contact (e.g. email.com or email.o2.net) and added the domains receiving the email to the address space to allow the mail to be relayed through our exchange server.

So any email sent to the user with the external redirect is allowed to be sent to the domain of the external contact.

At present we only have 2 domains in the connector group to allow the routing of external email.

Do you have any comments on this resolution?

Thanks Cal
The only drawback with that is it could allow those users who have external email blocked will be able to send to users on that domain - who may not be your own staff, as you can only set the SMTP connector on domain - not email address.
