Getting explorer.exe - Application Error under Windows XP Pro

When I try to use the right click button or any button (example: copy, cut, paste, etc) at Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer, I get similar messages to the one below:

explorer.exe - Application Error
------------------------------------
The instruction at "0x77fcc641" referenced memory at "0x002e005f". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

         |OK|                   |Cancel|

After clicking either option the program shuts down and kind of resets all icons at the desktop and taskbar. A few seconds later, it brings back the taskbar and desktop icons, however, missing some of the icons next to the taskbar clock.

I have been reading about similar problems and apply their fixes without any resolution:

1. sfc /scannow
2. rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 C:\windows\inf\ie.inf
3. Windows Repair using CD which forced my to reload my partition C:
4. Reload Windows XP Pro completly but after installing Windows updates, Spy Sweeper, Norton System Works 2004 and Office 2003, the problem returned. Noticed it after the Office installation cause did not use the Windows Explorer for the previous two.

Please HELP !!!

I get a bunch of:

Source: Service Control Manager
Description:
The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service entered the stopped state.

Try Start->Run->SFC /Scannow
and then...
Start->Run->MSConfig
remove all items from the startup tab and reboot - does it still occur?
so u are not getting errors abt explorer.exe in event viewer,,,, hmmmmm have u tried to check for the problem in safemode yet ??

Will try now, what is really confusing me is that IMAPI CD-Burning COM in all of the messages. Is that from Windows XP?

Be back in a second with the response of the Safe Mode.

Thanks

You probably should just perform a repair install if your memory checked out okay...

I already did that twice and in both cases the OS crashed on me after the first reboot. I am not sure if it is because of the Windows Updates or else. My memory checked out fine.

On the order hand, I've been searching the web for similar issues and I have noticed a lot of them since June 2004. Same or very similar. Could it be one of the updates I made?, here is the list I have since my last reinstallation:

You are going to love this news. First I recomend testing the ram
http://www.memtest86.com/ download the program and boot of the floppy / cd you make
only let it run for about 1 hour if it takes any longer just restart you computer and take out the floppy / cd
if it doesn't find any errors countine reading
I had the same problem with my compaq it was under warrenty so I took it in. It happened to be that my harddrive was bad so they replaced my harddrive for free. If your computer/harddrive is under warrenty have it looked at. Now from my understandings you did a repiar on xp. You should do a clean earse to verfiy it is not a software issue, because some pc places charge you like $85 to have you computer looked at hope this helps. Oh and before taking in you pc or replacing the harddrive backup all your file you need via cd, jumpdrive and even via gmail if you need a gmail account let me know and I could work on getting you one.
But my guess is it the harddrive take my advance it took me 4 months to get the problem solved with warrenty.
ok forget memtest86 I was reading and I think you already did it. So the only thing you need to do is do a clean reinstall by formating the hd to make sure it is not OS. You haven't already done so. I think you have?

so just follow this

Hi BigDog5191:

Thanks for the reply. I already did the clean install twice due to the crashes. I did discoverd up to 2.5MB bad sectors the first time I formatted the drive though. One question that comes into my mind is, Why is it that the error only happens when I use either of those two files (explorer.exe or iexplorer.exe)?, if a hardware failure is the cause, wouldn't happen as well with any other files using that sector of the drive?

Thanks in advance.

By the Way, my HDD is under warranty and I can get it replaced without any troubles but, my fear is that the problem seems to me like software related.

Ohhhh, forgot another thing. I did used the SATA drive instead of the ATA I originally had installed on the PC. Now I am using a totally different HDD for the OS partition and it is doind the same thing.

Man, I have tested disabling all content Menu and it works. Then I enabled them all back and started 1 by 1 and found that disabling the following file, actually worked:

Extension: Webroot Spy Sweeper Context Menu Integration
Type: Context Menu
Description: Spy Sweeper Context Menu
Version: 3.0.0.113
Filename: C:\PROGRA~1\Webroot\SPYSWE~1\SSCtxMnu.dll
CLSID: {7C9D5882-CB4A-4090-96C8-430BFE8B795B}

For now, the solution is working fine. I'll be giving you updates everyday fr the rest of the week to see if this is a final resolution.

Thank you very much !!

You were really great.

JMP.
Superb !!!!!!  :D
I also have this problem, and it's from "Spy Sweeper Context Menu" !!!

Too bad  :(
I have been searching for a solution to this for a week or so with no progress at all! Everyone seems to conclude its the SpySweeper proggie but I have never installed that!! HOWEVER, the solution offered here led to the ShellExView program and thankyou VERY MUCH cos I FINALLY found out what also causes this problem. As mentioned briefly above it was in fact a DivX sheel extension :
==================================================
Extension Name    : EncodeDivXContextMenu Class
Disabled          : Yes
Type              : Context Menu
Description       : EncodeDivXExt Module
Version           :
Product Name      : EncodeDivXExt Module
Company           :
My Computer       : No
Desktop           : No
Control Panel     : No
Filename          : C:\Program Files\DivX\Dr.DivX\EncodeDivXExt.dll
CLSID             : {E9F5B111-CACC-4FD4-81FD-4EB4FD6765A3}
==================================================

Hope this helps someone else as this is a VERY frustrating problem.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed ;-)
I seems that my "Avi Properties Handler" is what is causing my error. I am wondering if it is okay to keep on disabled? Is there anyway to fix it (besides a reinstall).  Thanks.

P.S. If you answer my question I'll give you the points from my first post about this error:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21127363/explorer-application-error.html
i searched experts exchange and found that the "Avi Properties Handler" can be unregistered doing no harm to my comp thanks SheharyaarSaahil you comment seemed to help a large variety of explorer.exe problems :D
Thanks SheharyaarSaahil the ShellExView/context menu fix worked, for me it was Dr. Divx that gave me problems.
glad its working for you guys..... :)
hi guys, i don't use this service much, but this thread was a godsend. i had a slightly different problem, but related.  whenever i had my explorer up, and in the left pane, would drag to scroll button down, as soon as i hit the button on the bottom, I would get the error "cannot read memory bla bla bal".  I assumed it was a memory problem (silly me), and replaced all the memory in my computer for starters. then i down loaded the sharewara version of pc rescue and ran it.  Although i could not run the repair because i had not licensed, it did give me a list of 23 errors associated with active x.  basically telling me that a lot of .dll files were missing in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\..  These files wer in my .net directory.  I copyied them the the SYSTEM32 DIRECTORY and poof, my troubles were over.  hope this helps others.  I think I might have inadvertantly deleted them when answer "delete all" when removing software.  So, turns out one gets an ms memory error when files are missing too.
by the way, my problems were with W2Kserver.
further to above:  I thought the above stuff had fixed my problem, but it came back to haunt me.  However, reading another thread on ANNOYANCES.COM, I tried a suggestion for XP, and I think it has worked for me.  I was using a short-cut to open explorer with options to force it to open at the appropriate drive.  When I blew away this short cust and opened explorer normally, everthing seems to work perfectly now.  go figure.   I am attempting to now re-build my short cut to see where it causes the problem.  hope this helps some of you
