Disable shutdown for specific users on an XP machine / group policy 101 questions
In a workgroup, there's an XP Pro machine being used as the 'server' to share files. Â I want to keep people that use that machine from shutting it down and messing up others that might have files open / come in ealier then these people and the 'server' is still turned off from the night before.
Doing some searches on the web, I came up with this group policy setting:
Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / User Rights Assigment Remove the users group from the right "Shut down the system"
That keeps the shutdown button, but when those users that were removed from that list try to shut down, they just get a choice to logoff.
I I think I wanted to remove the shutdown button and some more hunting came up with:
User Configuration >Â Administrative Templates >Â Start Menu &Â TaskBar
enable Remove and Prevent Access to the Shut Down Command
which does remove the shutdown button. Â But in local policy (this is a workgroup), changes to the user config...what users does that effect? Â the computer config affects all users logging in. Â does user do the same? Â Is there a way in group policy for a workgroup machine to have GP user config work differently for different users?

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
