Ghosting a RAID 5 Array

Ok, for all you experts here is a question that has been eating away at me for months.  Does anyone have a good method for creating a ghost image of a RAID 5 set?  Or a good utility to do so with?

And since I think we could all use this edification, the points are high.

personally i didnt  do that before, but i think it is possible and feasible, although it sounds that ghost is not very good on cloning RAID5 set, probably because of driver issues. so whats your problem? i think you must have got problems or difficulties at somewhere. hope we may find the solution together, before xmas. ;)

Hi Fatal_Exception,

Which RAID controller do you have? That would make it easier to see if Norton Ghost will work for you.
I know Norton Ghost works with most Adaptec controllers.

Hello Experts!

I posted this just as a theoretical exercise.  Couple of years ago while building a server I started thinking about how I would ghost a SCSI or IDE RAID array.  I was using Adaptec Controller Cards, so lets just throw that into the mix.

I have never actually tried it, but if I have time I may try using Norton G to independently ghost each drive.  hmmmm   So you think it would recognize the card?  Sure worth trying.

BTW:  Hope nobody minds if I end up splitting the points up here.  I will let stay open till after Xmas to let everyone get in on this.

Happy Holidays everyone!

I want to thank everyone for their comments.  I will split the points accordingly.  :)  I can't wait to get a chance to try it.

Happy Holidays to all of you!

Norton Ghost 8 or ealier does not support RAID.  The best product for taking an image of a RAID array seems to be PowerQuest V2i Server Edition.  It takes an image of any NAS, SAN or RAID while the data is online.

Ghosting a RAID array works fine with CPQ and Dell but it bites when it comes to any IBM xSeries.  There is a compatibility issue with the DOS INT13H AND THE ServeRAID BIOS.  Even though I loaded the RAID driver for DOS in the config.sys file, Ghost hang when I selected the disk to be imaged.

I had a better success rate with Dell.  It works on any Dell 1550, 1650 or 2550.  That is what we have in the shop.  You can Ghost the image to the network or to the local disk.

Ghost is a great product but it is more for desktops.

Hope this helps.

Denise
Thanks Denise..!!

I have succesfully used Norton Ghost 2003 on COMPAQ/HP RAID 1 & RAID 5 servers.
The only thing we had in 50% of the cases was a damaged recycle bin. Who cares? :-D
