asked on

my Microsoft internet explorer seems to be unable to locate URL's

Hello
By the way, thank you for helping me solve the problem of bringing up win98 from scratch. You help was correct and on the money in alleviating the *.vxd files as well as the msnp32.dll file. thank you again.

I have something else that I need alittle help on. When I request a url from microsoft internet explorer, few times, I connect correctly yet others times I end us with all the matched url's like the one that I wanted. When I select the one I want again out of the matches, the microsoft browser times out in attempting to hook up  to it. I know it's there because i had found it on another pc hookup in the house.
By the way I am on a Wireless cable network with my daughter and my son. We use the same router and cable modem. we are usually on at the same time most of the day. could the be a problem?
Anyway,When I request a website, there's really no telling if the web site will be found or the browser attempt in searching for the suggested url will time out, or it will produce a search for all the matched websites and ask me to select the one I want. When i do, I go into the timed out search error. Is there anyyhing internally on the win 98 system area that would possibly need change to it? I would appreciate any help that can be given to the problem.
Thank you

callrs:
the visual indicator does moves quickly at first then it dies out all together and then stops about 60% of the way there. This is happening on a url that connects fine on another pc.

Perhaps this is related to the other question you still have open concerning the Java VM file you deleted?
Have you addressed that issue yet?

Billdl;
That problem has been fixed. this seems to be something new. I am not totally satisfied that the browser is working correctly. Is there any way that I can check if the  url that I am trying to connect to, times out legitimately or is there a problem in the attempt in connecting? There seems to be too many web pages that are timing out in the attempt to connect to them.
thanks
mrtigre,

Have you followed callrs advice on trying this with an alternate browser, yet?  If you get the same results with a nother browser, we can troubleshoot your wireless connectivity.  If you do not get the same results, we can work on fixing IE.

Please let us know.  I would recommend Firefox or Opera over Maxthon or Avant (may be mistaken) because I believe Maxthon is just a shell over IE's inner workings.

It looks like the winsock fix worked. I am still using maxthon, I will change to Firefox or OPera next. I have tried everyway to duplicate the problems in connecting with a website and it looks like this time it was successful and much quicker.thanks for the remedy for that problem.

That is great.

I see you are new at EE.

Thank you,

to double check one reason that might be the cause is the hosts file.  navigate here: \windows\system32\drivers\etc

there will be a file named hosts with no extensions.  open that with notepad and see whats it in.  the only address that should be there is 127.0.0.1    loopback, any other lines with the loopback address is wrong, unless you had anti spyware utils that purposely put sites in there so it loopsback and does reach the bad sites.

but if you see legitimate websites listed with a loopback then its spyware/adware/malware thats messing your IE up.
Billy
i would have checked that file to see if it was the problem before running hte winsockfix... because at least you would have known if that was the problem or if it was hardware related with your connection... but now we might not find out what the cause really was :(

if there is still spyware on your machine, then it might put more addresses in sooner or later.
baconyi,

The winsockfix that blue_zee pointed to changes the Hosts file?
sorry, forgot to read the topic section, what i gave u was 2000 and xp.... my apologies... not sure what the 98 winsock fix does. i assume the same thing, but i am unsure the location of the file
Why did you accept callrs answer when you said the Winsock fix did it?

Misclick?

Shouldn't it be this one?

BillDL,
Thanks for that clarification.  I was unaware.
Thank you, mrtigre.

Zee
Thank you, mrtigre.  I'm a bit embarrassed being included in the points split though, because all I did was to clarify how the Winsock Fix utility worked.  Points gratefully accepted, however, because I really need to try and catch up with blue_zee in the next decade ;-)
Why my answer was accepted initially?
Because of the pure joy of Maxthon compared to IE! lol. It either WAS the fix in the confusion, or gave so much joy to the point of disorientation  : )

Catch up to blue_zee? Like me?! 0 to 1500K in  4 1/3 months, up to 35k/day.   *E-mail Overload*

There , there guys, lets not fight. I am sure this won't be the last time I get myself into trouble. And when I do I will be sure to include for each of you because it will probrably take all  of you to undo what I did wrong!
thnx again

LOL

Hopefully we will soon see you fighting for the points too...

Cheers,

Zee

I'm definitely not as good as you experts. The only points I get are the one's from my wife when i accomplish a chore or task to her liking.
mrtiger - I echo that!  At least EE lets you cash in on them at 3000 after the initial 10000, for rewards.  If your wife is like mine, we're both sitting on a pile of them being told "I'll tell you when you have enough to qualify for the reward program..." :)
wrong account, but the story is the same :D

reward program?
what's that? after thirty five years married , the only reward I was allowed was a place at the table with the family at dinner.Up to that time it was the bed for the dog. when I reach Another 5000 points  I get so many minutes to use sp that I can express my feelings to my family. 3000 more points and I can actually eat a meal with them.

He, he.  This is hilarious - please carry on ;-)
