How long it takes to master a database application development?

Dear EE members,
I want to learn programming. But, don't know how far should I learn for a topic,e.g: build a database application. what is the easier and hot language to learn for database application?

I heard someone say that once you can write database application, you can shift from one language to another. Is it true?

I am interested to write database application for desktop and web base. But, don't know where to start?

I want to earn living by programming. How big and powerful should the application I write, if I am the only programmer?

to be honest, no one could give the right answer except yourself as the question is regarding yourself (background, knowledge, learning ability, personal goal and even personality). other people could only give a general idea or an approach. that's the best they can do...

I think your opinion has some worthwhile advices:
1. Identify what to achive.
2. Consistently learn the skills to achive it.
3. Talent to understand program.
4. Talent to write program.

Part 3 and 4 are where I am lacking.

item 2 can actually overcome 3 and 4 though it's not an efficient approach. :-))
