microsoft installer pops up
Each time I open Outlook or Internet Explorer the installer pops up several times. Yes its a common problem but I can't seem to shake it. I'm on XP platform with all current updates.
I've tried repair and reinstall per data base article 318378 & 315341.
I've tried to make a new profile but it has the same problem.
I've complied with article 265194 to modify the registry.
I tried changing the group policy editor to prevent running installer but I think this applies to new program additions.
And I followed a previous answer on this site by using msicuu. I had this program from my tools directory on the disk, installed it to C: and ran it. But each time I run it a different application(s) appears in the dialogue window and I select and delete the installer registry entries. Will I have to continue this procedure for all my programs? I understood a list of problem programs would appear and I would have to deal with this issue only once...did I miss something?
Finally, I ran msizap.exe p to remove the install in progress key.
Any new suggestions would be appreciated.

Try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q238/4/13.ASP&NoWebContent=1
This has the Utilty and the explenation.
Or go directly and download the Installer cleanup utility from:
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/msicuu.exe

OferCOF, I have the utility msicuu as noted in my question and I have run it several times with a new program listed each time - don't know if this is normal or not or if I should keep running this over and over.

bruintje, I would try this but note the problem occurs with both Outlook and Internet Explorer so I suspect reloading Office will not help although I did try a repair/install already. Cleared out the registry entries and reloaded but no help.
Couple more things to try:
1. If it's not happening when logged on as an administrator, try giving local administrator rights to everyone, logon as the user let it install, log out and reset the permissions.
2. Check your default settings for IE - make sure all the programs you're using as defaults are setup properly and try clicking the restore settings button.
3. Check you outlook mail format settings change HTML settings to RTF and don't use word as your email editor.
4. Check the registry for Installer keys and delete the appropriate product keys under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Wi ndows\Curr entVersion \Installer and under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\In staller\Pr oducts (If exists).
5. If nothing else workd, uninstall Office and reinstall maybe in a different folder.

and another one
-uninstall office first
-then uninstall IE if possible at all - if not then do a repair of IE
-then reboot an install office

tankbob, sounds like you've had and cleared this problem before. Could you elaborate on your answer so I can follow step by step? Just need more confidence I can recognize the "registry key it is looking for" and can "create that key(how?)" Appreciate your response. Meantime I'll try the other suggestions.

Re my comment above, plunged in despite my inexperience with this area and found a missing dll file was the problem with Explorer. Got it off the web and now that bug is repaired. Error message for Outlook says it is missing the .exe file yet it still runs. But now I know how to go about solving this problem. In doing so also found a clock sync problem message that I was able to chase down and repair. So, the future looks much brighter. I believe Tankbob has led me to the solution and I award him all the points.

or uninstall office completely cleanup the registry [no clue when that is true] and try to install again between a lot of reboots
just a few ideas
