How to install the Patch 1 update for PaperPort 14.5

PaperPort 14.5 Patch 1 update is often not detected or downloaded automatically. This article provides direct download links to solve the problem for retail (non-bundled) versions of the Standard and Professional editions, as well as the Professional edition in Nuance's own OmniPage Ultimate bundle.

In a previous article here at Experts Exchange, I wrote about my experience with Nuance's PaperPort 14 on the Windows 10 Technical Preview.


During the comments at that article, an EE member asked if I had heard anything about an update to PaperPort 14.5. I replied that Nuance released PaperPort 14.5 Patch 1 on 12-Jun-2015. The patch should be available via the Common Software Update Manager (used by PaperPort and other Nuance products). But if the update is not detected or not downloaded by your PaperPort 14.5, here are direct download links:

At the time of those comments, I pointed out that Patch 1 worked only for retail versions, not OEM bundles; and, due to a glitch that Nuance had not yet fixed, Patch 1 did not work on Nuance's own OmniPage Ultimate bundle. The purpose of this new article is to document that Nuance has finally fixed Patch 1 so that it works on the PaperPort Professional 14.5 that is bundled with OmniPage Ultimate. But, and it's a big but, there is still a problem reported by many users, namely, the Common Software Update Manager may detect the update:

But clicking the Install or Download Only buttons both fail, hanging forever on this screen:

The solution is to download the Patch 1 installer from this direct link:

After downloading it, close PaperPort and run it. Here's the installer's first screen:

Even though you closed PaperPort, there will probably be some PaperPort processes running, so the next screen will likely be this:

Select the Automatically close and attempt to restart applications radio button and you should get this successful installation dialog:

Article Update on 15-May-2016: I've received messages from members asking how to tell from the Help>About dialog box if Patch 1 is installed. The bad news is that the dialog does not mention Patch 1 (in neither the Version nor the BUILDID). The good news is that there's a way to do it for the three editions of PaperPort 14.5 that support Patch 1, as follows:


PaperPort 14.5 Professional – Retail

Base BUILDID: PP-1308-011-13264.1829

After Patch 1: PP-1308-011-15264.1200


PaperPort 14.5 Standard – Retail

Base BUILDID: PP-1313-011-13264.1826

i did everything and it ran fine up until w10 v 1703 then it reverted to
Machine: AMD A10-5800K APU,  10 Home Edition, 8 GB ram, 64 bit Windows x64 processor, 1 TB Hard drive, desktop
Scanner:  Cannon 210
PaperPort version 14.5 + patch 1

Program ran fine for a while on Windows 7, upgraded to windows 10 even after the updates,
Had an issue uninstalled and reinstalled the 14.5 patch 1 worked fine even in 1703 version of w10. then
Program glitched, flashed on the screen like it was having an epileptic seizure.
Message " error and that was shutting down ". After that I got :

PaperPort seems to be running in Windows XP Compatibility mode which may result in errors
We recommend disabling Compatibility mode for the paperport.exe program see, Technote
6629.

You cannot disable compatibility support. You must choose some sort of compatibility.

I am considering the possibility of upgrading from PP9Pro to PP14.5Pro but after reading about all the problems with this software, I am looking for other more compatible options with Windows 10.   You need to be a guru or geek to be able to install and get a program to work because it has not been duly nor properly customized for us non-techies. This is really scary to say the least!

upgrading from PP9Pro to PP14.5Pro
I used PP9Pro for many years — was one of the best PaperPort releases ever! I was reluctant to "upgrade" from it, but eventually went to PP10 (terrible version), then 11, 12, and 14 (as I'm sure you know, Nuance was superstitious and did not have a PP13). I'm now running PP14.5Pro/Patch1 and am happy with it. My production machines are still W7, but I do have PP14.5Pro/Patch1 in a W10 sandbox where it runs fine, although it is not in heavy use there. For PaperPort users on W10, I suggest reading another one of my EE articles and following the Tips in it:

looking for other more compatible options with Windows 10
I can't recommend anything from personal experience because, as I mentioned above, my production computers are still W7 and I have relatively little experience with other such products on W10. However, I've heard some users in the PaperPort community say that they're now successfully using Lucion's FileCenter and Tracker's PDF-XChange PRO in W10, so you may want to take a look at those. I've done three 5-minute video Micro Tutorials here at EE on the free version of PDF-XChange:

Also, Nuance has another product in the PDF space called Power PDF, which comes in both Standard and Advanced editions. I've published an article and two 5-minute video Micro Tutorials here at EE on the Advanced edition:

I hear you on that, although it may be a bit of an overstatement. I don't think that you have to be a "guru" or "geek" to download and install PP14.5 and Patch1. There are certainly equally challenging issues for "non-techies" with other products, including Windows itself and Microsoft Office.
This is really scary to say the least!
I don't think that it's any scarier than other stuff that we do on our Windows-based computers all the time — I hold my breath on every Windows update. :)  I know that some folks who use W10 in production were terrified of the Version 1709 update (aka the Fall Creators Update) — talk about scary! :)

After install Parperport patch 1 for version 14.5 pro the software quit working and brings up the error that the program seems to be running in Windows XP compatibility mode. After numerous attempts at uninstalling and reinstalling Paperport Pro 14.5 the error continues and the program will not run. I have found no way to remove the patch or correct the problem. The so fix says to uncheck the compatibility mode box for the version it is reported running in but the box is not checked. Stumped.

Hi. Joe. I am and have been using Paperport 14.5 Professional for several years. I just bought a new pc. I downloaded the Patch 1 successfully but it would not install. The Windows installer says the program is missing even though I had been using Paperport on the new machine for several days. Don't know where to go from here. Can you help?

Note that Patch 1 is not a full version of PaperPort 14.5 — it is simply an update (a patch) to an already-installed PP14.5. So, when trying to install Patch 1, if the installer says that the program is missing, it likely means that PP14.5 is not installed. But since you say that you had been using PaperPort on the new machine for several days, my guess is that it's PaperPort 14.0, not 14.5. If that's the case, then first do the upgrade from 14.0 to 14.5 (free!), as described in another one of my EE articles:

PaperPort 14 - Free Upgrade to Version 14.5

After you're sure that 14.5 is installed (check the version in Help>About), install Patch 1, as described in this article.

One other point: Patch 1 cannot be applied to OEM versions of PaperPort, such as those bundled with scanners and all-in-one devices. If that's what you have, that's the reason for the problem. Patch 1 can be applied only to retail versions, both the Standard and Professional editions, as well as the Professional edition in Nuance's own OmniPage Ultimate bundle. Also, note that there are three different downloads for those three editions, i.e., Retail/Std, Retail/Pro, OP-Ultimate/Pro. Those three links are in this article — make sure that you downloaded the right one for your PaperPort. Regards, Joe

Hi, Joe. You were right. I had not installed the 14.5 update when I installed Paperport on my new PC. I installed from the original CD I got when I bought the program. I do not recall getting any other programs - just Paperport. I did the 14.5 update with no issue. I have tried again to install Patch 1 but I got the same answer from my Windows Installer. How would I be able tell if my version was some version that would not be compatible with Patch 1?

Click the Help menu, then the About PaperPort button on the ribbon. Tell me what the first three lines say. For example, mine look like this:

pp14.5 pro help about
Either type it in or post a screenshot, but if you do the latter, be sure to redact or crop out the S/N, as I did  — not a good to idea to post that on the Internet. Speaking of that, it's also not a good idea to put your email address in public posts here at EE (it's ok in the EE private message system), so I've asked the EE Mods to remove it from your first post. Got it! And it's good news. You have a retail version of PP14.5 Pro, so you should be able install Patch 1 on it. The link for the file you want is this:

That's great news, Frank! I'm very glad to hear that you now have PaperPort Pro 14.5 with Patch 1 installed.

I (and all my clients) have never had a Canon scanner, so I can't speak from personal experience, but I do know that ScanGear is Canon's TWAIN-compatible and WIA-compatible scanning driver. You should be able to download it from the Drivers&Downloads section of the Canon support website. Make sure that you download the version that supports your particular scanner model and your version of Windows, including its bit level. After installing it, PaperPort should automatically detect its existence and offer its TWAIN and WIA drivers in the Scan or Get Photo pane (when you click the Desktop menu, then the Scan Settings button on the ribbon). But that's just a guess on my part, since I've never had ScanGear installed. If you need further help on it, click the big, blue "Ask a Question" button at the top of this page (or any EE page), fill in the simple form, and submit it. There are likely many other EE members who have Canon scanners and are more knowledgeable than I am about ScanGear. Regards, Joe

 I did stop PP 14.5 from dying when starting, by doing the REG EDIT fix, now that I have that fixed I thought that I would do the patch thingy. I've had the ultimate since 2014, and I did not know that there was a patch for it until this month. I tried to install it per your instructions but it is not able to find my copy of the program.  I installed the program on my "D" drive. Is there another secret that I was not given?

OK, Juan, I just wanted to be sure that your PaperPort is the one that was included in the OmniPage Ultimate bundle — it is! My guess is that you downloaded the wrong file. The one that you need for the OmniPage Ultimate bundle is this:

The "v4" Pro file does not work with the PaperPort Pro in the OmniPage Ultimate bundle — only the "v3" file does. Regards, Joe

Joe you are right I did try to install "V4", I am trying now to install "V3" it has been sitting at "V3" after 1.5 hours.
I will see if I can cancel it in a little while and try again. My original reinstall sat here for about an hour before it cam back.

The Patch1 update has always been very fast for me. Maybe the attempt to install v4 messed things up, although I doubt it (it should have detected immediately that you didn't have the right base product for the v4 Patch1 and simply exited without doing anything). I've also never seen a reinstall sit on any screen for an hour, so you have some strange things going on there. Btw, the screenshot in your last post looks like a PaperPort install, not Patch1. Is it PaperPort or Patch1? Of course, make sure PaperPort is closed when you install Patch1 (or when you reinstall PaperPort). Regards, Joe

1. I did a cancel on the installation button after two hours, (It stayed up)
2. then I checked that PP would boot, it did,
3. I then did "reboot" of system , PaPerPort screen holding up reboot, I did a force quit.
4. When the system rebooted I tested PP to make sure it worked, it did. (old Build)
5. I started the installation again (V3), after the patch window was finished the PP installation window came up, I did a Ctrl+Alt+Delete and killed the PP installation task.
6. After the reboot I booted PP and guess what, here is my build.

good patch install
So far "PP 14.5 Patch1" works  (Until it dos not) and I am right back where I started.

We just installed paperport Version 14.5 and we can't get the  "Send To Options--Microsoft Outlook to work.  We can drag a file to MO and it will work, but we want to drag the file to the Microsoft Outlook add on button to send the file via email.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(1) Do you have Patch 1 installed (as discussed in this article)?

(2) What version of Outlook?

(3) 32-bit or 64-bit Office?

(4) Is Outlook set as the default mail (MAPI) client?

(5) What version of Windows?

(6) 32-bit or 64-bit Windows?

(7) You say that you can't get the Outlook icon on the Send To Bar to work. How does it fail "to work"? Can you not even get the icon on the Send To Bar? Or is it on the Send To Bar, but dragging to it fails? If so, how does it fail? Error message or dialog box? Simply does nothing after the drag-and-drop? PaperPort crashes? Something else?

Answers to those questions will start us on the path to helping you. Regards, Joe

Yes, but that relies on the Common Software Update Manager working correctly. :) It also relies on having it installed...first thing I do when I see it on my system is uninstall it (Section VII in my PaperPort 14.5 Free Upgrade article).
