Before you start a podcast of your own, you’ll need to get the right equipment. To help you get started off on the right foot, here’s a list of the four critical items you’ll need to start your own podcast.
1. A microphone suited for the task.
An appropriate podcasting microphone should use a USB output, and will also ideally have a dedicated headphone output, so you can monitor the recording without running it through a PC. An affordable solution is the Yeti from Blue Microphones, which sounds great, meets all the above requirements, and even comes with a stand.
2. The right headphones make a difference.
While recording, a decent set of over-the-ear headphones will prevent ambient noise from distracting you, and more importantly, will allow you to clearly listen to what you’re recording. For around $20, you can try a pair of Sennheiser HD201 headphones, so you can get started at a reasonably low cost.
3. Software is crucial for quality and distribution.
Any software you use should be able to record and edit your voice, along with publishing capabilities to ensure you’re able to distribute your podcast in the right format. There’s a wide range of programs that fit the bill, but a good starting point would be Garageband for Apple users, or ePodcast Producer for PC.
4. Find your niche.
While covering podcasting equipment, it’s easy to lose sight of the real purpose: An engaging podcast. The best-sounding podcast in the world won’t save you if the topic doesn’t interest your audience. While you’re assembling the right equipment for a great-sounding podcast, don’t forget to plan out your conversation topics and spot trends so you give yourself the best chance of podcasting success.
