Prerequisites of SharePoint 2013, 2010 & 2007 to SharePoint Online Migration

Before moving from one SharePoint to another SharePoint account or to SharePoint Online, it is important to keep some things in mind. Let us have a look:

  • Raising the license of SharePoint Online in Office 365 mailboxes so that, the source data will be combined with a targeted account
  • Create an account for Admin source and target domain
  • Generate the interaction plans & prompt a notification merging of two Office 365 Tenants

SharePoint to SharePoint Office 365 Migration Using Manual Approach

MovingSharePoint online site to another tenant can be done through ‘Save site as template’ functionality of SharePoint. This is the most reliable method but users may require some technical knowledge and skills too. During the migration process, users must have to save an origin site as a template and link it to the destination site. Next, they can copy content from one SharePoint site to another for completing the SharePoint Online migration procedure. This activity is categorized into 3 major steps:

  1. Keep the source site as a template
  2. Browse a saved template to the destination site
  3. Copy the content from one source site to destination site

Step 1: Save Source Site as a Template

  • Click on Site Settings and then, choose the Save this site as template option under the Site Action
  • Type all the details about template
  • Next, templates are stored in the Solution Gallery of the site collection. Then, click on the saved template for preserving it to a local system.

Step 2: Browse Saved template to the destination site

  • Now, you can attach the saved template to the destination site
  • In the destination, generate a new site and choose Select template later… the alternative that is placed under custom tab
  • Once a new site collection is created, open it. This time you must add a template to it from Solution Gallery
  • Choose the option upload the site template from Solution Gallery that is stored on the system
  • To start the solution, hit on Active button
  • Navigate to Custom tab and you can view that a new template is added there.
  • Finally, copy the content from a source site to the targeted site in SharePoint Online

Step 3: Copy Content from Source to the Destination site

You can also copy the content from a source SharePoint Online site to destination O365 SharePoint online site after mapping these two sites to a network location. For doing this, follow the below steps:

  • Right-click on My Computer and select Map network drive.
  • Then, go to Connect to a Website so that you can save your documents and pictures.
  • In the third steps, Hit on Choose a custom network location
  • Now, you have to provide the desired path of a source SharePoint site
  • Similarly, map the destination site to a location of the network
  • Finally, copy the content of Source site folder and paste this into the destination site folder

Point to Remember: The option ‘Save site as the template' of SharePoint Online is a collaboration feature and this will be used for site migrations among two dissimilar O365 SharePoint Online tenants.
