Switching from G suite to Office 365? Here are the top 5 reasons you need know for G Suite to Office 365 migration, comparing all the possible factors of both Google Apps and Exchange Online.

Both G Suite and Office 365 are software as a service (SaaS) platforms. But both have different features and functionalities. When it comes to the selection of one public service provider over another, then organizations make the decision depending upon their own business requirements. Moreover, there are many Google Apps users who are migrating to Office 365.

There can be many reasons behind this migration process. The two possible reasons which are responsible for this migration can be the features and price factors of the public cloud vendors. However, Office 365 is integrated with numerous advanced features due to which organizations are switching from G Suite to Office 365.  Additionally, in this blog, we are going to discuss why the users are moving to Office 365.

Why Migrate from G Suite to Office 365?

Now the question arises: Is Office 365 better Than G Suite? There are many users who are migrating from Google Apps to Office 365 because they may consider that it is more reliable and efficient in terms of performance and security. Moreover, some potential advantages of Office 365 are listed below which (in my opinion) makes it better than G Suite in every way.

  • Familiarity
  • File and Email Storage
  • Offline File Access Capabilities
  • Desktop Application Entitlement
  • Security and Threat Protection

1. Microsoft Office 365 provides Familiar Apps

As compared to most of the other public cloud providers, Microsoft has a great familiarity with their Office 365 applications. This familiarity with MS Office 365 applications can be very attractive for the Windows-centric organizations who need to migrate to Office 365 from Google’s G Suite.

Moreover, Microsoft has also kept the applications between the on-prem variant and Office 365 cloud very efficiently. The features of the Office suite of the business application are mostly the same in the cloud as the full installation on-prem. Additionally, Office 365 business productivity apps are more feature-rich as compared to G Suite.

2. Office 365 File and Email Storage

For every organization, the large amount of storage space is a very basic necessity. Large amounts of data are generated by every company or a person on daily basis. Therefore, a good storage capacity is required to store data. Now, when it comes to the storage capacity of Office 365 and G Suite, there is a lot of difference. Office 365 Business essentials offer 1 Tb of storage space per user, whereas Google’s G Suite basic plan offers only 30 GB of space. Note that additional space "can" be purchased (at additional cost) for use with G Suite.

3. Offline File Access Capabilities

Capabilities to work with files offline is offered by both MS Office 365 and Google G Suite. However, Microsoft solutions are easier and smoother to implement as compared to Google’s solution. To work with G Suite offline files, the user has to make use of Google Chrome and then installing the Google Docs offline extension. This will enable the user to work with G Suite files offline. These files are synchronized back to the cloud once the connectivity is restored.

On the other hand, the integration for manipulating files offline becomes more smooth with Microsoft's OneDrive as compared to G Suite. The user just has to make sure that the files are synchronized with OneDrive and then he/she can work with the files using the traditional Office 365 desktop applications. The Office 365 offline working does not depend on a specific browser but it relies on the OneDrive synchronization down to the device. With OneDrive, the user can easily synchronize files to a laptop and then he/she can edit the files directly from OneDrive.

Moreover, the Windows operating system is running in most enterprise environments which is another advantage of Microsoft Office 365. Having the integration with today’s Windows operating systems, ownership from an operating system perspective, the Microsoft public cloud is a very powerful and great combination. OneDrive is now a part of the Windows operating system, which makes the integration tight and smooth.

When to comes to synchronization with local devices G Suite Drive is synchronized using Google Drive Stream. Apart from this, Microsoft offers different options including OneDrive and OneDrive Files on Demand. The major difference between OneDrive and OneDrive Files on Demand is:

  •  With Files on Demand service option, the files are only downloaded when they are accessed
  • OneDrive synchronizes all the files locally with the cloud so that everything is downloaded.

4. Desktop Application Entitlement

As in point 3, we have mentioned one of the huge benefits of Office 365 subscription as a business which is the ability to load Microsoft application locally. Nowadays, most of the large organization have ‘fat’ client installations of Microsoft applications. In other words, one can say that locally installed instances of these applications. These applications include Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.

For Microsoft, the ability to download and install full copies of the Microsoft Office suite of applications is a huge advantage among all the other public cloud vendors. Moreover, its cloud-only productivity application offerings are also one of the big advantages. For the organizations who need a powerful and reliable toolset of applications, Microsoft Office 365 is the best pick. As it is a public cloud offering with the desktop applications installation entitlement. That makes a user go for G Suite to Office 365 migration.

5. Security and Threat Protection

One of the major reasons behind the migration of G Suite to Office 354 is the security concern of the organization and users. Public cloud vendors offer a high-level of security. But when it comes to G Suite and Office 365 both have different security measures. Google offers security features such as the Google Security Center to the G Suite users. However, in my opinion, the security provided by Google is not as powerful as the security measures offered by Office 365.

Microsoft provides an efficient level of security services as it spends a large amount of its revenue on security. For information protection, strong rights management and data loss protection services are offered by Office 365. All the data of Office 365 user including emails, sites, files are protected. On the other hand, G Suite provides rights management and data loss protection services to protect on emails.

Moreover, Advanced Threat Protection services are also offered by Microsoft to Office 365 customers. This service provides URL scanning, impersonation, and anti-phishing protection, email attachment scanning, malicious file blocking, spoofed email message protection etc.

After understanding all the benefits associated with MS Office 365, may conclude that it is better than G Suite in every perspective. Now, the question crops up, how to migrate from G Suite to Office 365?
