This article explains it better, but the gist of it is that the developers are dropping the "JS" so we might as well too, and the version number (Angular 1, Angular 2, etc) really only needs to be referenced when talking about a specific feature in a specific version of Angular, or when reporting a bug ("I found this bug while using Angular 2.3.1..." for example).
It's not a huge deal...but all the cool kids are doing it ;)

in comparison, knockoutjs has to retain the js to give it meaning. In context of a web dev discussion we may refer to it as "knockout" though you still have to be pretty specific when dropping the js.
Another example is CakePHP. There are major differences between v2 and v3, yet it's referred to without the version.
