.NET to be Open-Sourced

If you haven't heard yet, the .NET Framework is going open-source. What are your thoughts on this? Will it make the Framework better? Will the Framework become fragmented by various groups who think they can do it better? Will we get toasters that can run .NET?

I'm betting that there a handful of shops that are more or less committed--for the time being--to Silverlight. With the push to HTML 5, Silverlight has become less of a necessity.

I'm just saying they caved.  I had a full enterprise application with dynamic canvases that could be done in silverlight, writing back to the DB without issue.  Silverlight was much better IMO, all object oriented.  But that's just one opinion, and I remember back in 2012 the thing was supposed to be ratified by now, yet it's still trudging along dragging their feet.

End of support for silverlight is 2023 I believe . . . I'm just saying they caved to the masses rather than running with their own technology.

It doesn't seem that MS wants to lead anymore (they haven't for a long time). They like to have the risk-takers in front of them.  Whoever seems to be doing well, they steer their direction, accelerated and eat them(ie. buy them out). Then they slow down and look for more risk takers.

That's most any large company theses days, wouldn't you say? Well, save maybe Google.

And Apple, HP is even getting straitened out (check out the "HP Sprout"?). There are plenty of innovative companies out there, but I must say that shareholders usually demand "safe."  Too bad "safe" rarely, if ever, creates anything special.
