win2k DNS probs

Hi

Has anyone heard of problems with 2000 clients using a local DNS Server? we use cisco network registrar. Problems are cannot resolve host names etc.. do not want to bother with HOST files. Would running DNS on a 2000 server help?

Thanks!

Win2k needs a dynamic DNS that can register hosts by itself.
can you add the hosts to you DNS manually?

Should work with  BIND DNS server as long as the W2K client is not trying to log into a W2K domain.
Hi.  I have had a similar issue when moving from Windows NT4.0 to Windows 2000 Workstations.  Basically, my Win2000 workstations would only resolve fully qualified names - i.e if the server was server1 - when pinging or using for other requirement i would have to do a ping server1.domain.com.  One way around the problem -which is not very dynamic ! is to add the DNS zones / domains into the DNS and advanced settings on your Windows 2000 client - that way when the workstations tries to resolve a host name it will go through the search order and pickup the fully qualifed name. - i havnt tried a 2000 DNS server yet so cant help you on that one !
what´s up?
