Full Biography

I love gluing bits of software from different sources into integrated problem solvers. Using such languages as WinBatch, Visual Basic (all flavors, from VBScript through VB6), Perl, JavsScript, and others, I have been doing that and more for over 25 years. My diverse application interests include business reporting, integrating external software and even hardware with data bases, and efficiently organizing and presenting large amounts of data to users in a Web browser. My goal is to solve whole classes of problems whenever practical, rather than confine myself to solving only the problem at hand. Consequently, I often find myself turning hacks into robust applications and documented, reusable code modules. To meet specific requirements, I have defined and implemented custom markup languages, several of which are in use today, embedded in production applications around the world.

My industry experience is comparably broad, including health and safety (Material Safety Data Sheets, Injury and Illness Reporting, and other areas) and marketing and financial reporting for real estate brokers, consumer lenders, property managers, and others.

My keen interest in reporting began with my work on an international banking application that ran on IBM S/34 hardware and was written entirely in COBOL. I refined my expertise with commercial lending applications that ran on IBM S/390 class mainframes and were also written in COBOL. My career progressed through IMS data bases, CICS and IMS terminal applications, and, finally, to stand alone and networked data base applications running on desktop computers. Not surprisingly, about half of the work that I do today involves the World Wide Web and private company Web applications that run on private networks.
