"The goal of the LabRats Science Education Project (LabRats) is to create a national organization with hundreds of thousands of members that teaches young adults aged 11 through 18 science, self-esteem, and the virtues of community service. Our approach can be summed up in one sentence: “We inspire kids to love learning about science and technology."

We’ve modeled LabRats on highly successful youth programs including Scouting organizations. In analogy to the Boy Scouts, members (both boys and girls) meet weekly for one hour in groups called “Synergies” that are led by an adult Synergy Leader. They also attend monthly daylong fieldtrips. Synergy Leaders are paid professional educators who have been certified in the LabRats' system of instruction known as "Engagement Education" The members then engage in fun hands-on science activities that promote teamwork, build character, teach leadership skills, improve habits of mind and provide a deeper understanding our Universe and the process of discovery.

Like the Scouts, LabRats has a merit-based system of advancement in which members gain responsibility as they develop competence in the program curricula and demonstrate their commitment to the program’s high ideals."
