----------------------- About Corporate Culture (source unknown) -----------------------
Put five hungry monkeys in a cage. You're watching them, with a hose in the hand. A bunch of bananas are suspended from the ceiling, a ladder underneath it. One monkey approaches the ladder to get a banana. As soon as it touches the ladder, you turn on the hose and douse all the monkeys with cold water until they are soaking wet. In a little while, another monkey will attempt to get a banana. Again, cold water for all of them. Continue this process until none of them dares to touch the ladder.
After a while you'll observe that when a monkey tries once again to get a banana, the others will grab it and hold it back, because they don't want another cold shower.
Now the moment has come to replace one monkey with a fresh one. As soon as the newcomer sees the bananas, it will try to get one but the others will viciously attack it. After a third or fourth attempt, the newcomer will have understood that it cannot have a banana. Then, replace another one of the original monkeys with a new one. As soon as it reaches for the ladder, it will get attacked by all the others, including the rapidly learning newcomer #1, that will be as enthusiastic as the rest of them, if not more so.
Once you have gradually replaced all the monkeys, the cage will contain five monkeys that have never had a cold shower but they'll never allow anyone to get a banana.
Why? You're just not supposed to do that here...

- EEN DOSIS DARTELHEID, Louise Fresco, NRC 26-01-1995 (in Dutch: https://www.nrc.nl/nieuws/1995/01/26/een-dosis-dartelheid-7254422-a905112)
My interpretation of the article, regarding intellectual friskiness: the writer compares the people in an organisation with a flock of sheep and lambs. It's her theory that an organisation needs a good mix of lambs and sheep. Lambs do all sorts of things that shouldn't be done and aren't allowed. Sheep do the same things every day. Sheep don't like lambs, they make too much noise and do things sheep know are forbidden or stupid. Lambs don't like sheep, they slow down the flow, are never in for something new and want everything done by the book. With only sheep the organisation heads for bureaucracy, with only lambs to anarchy.
