I think it would be more useful to have your iPhone warn you when an airpod is not near, then that would give you an instant alert that you should not leave the area until you trace your steps back.

For example, cars have keys that now only need to be remote.  They don't need to be placed into an ignition.  If you start the car and leave the car running with the keys in your pocket, the car beeps at you letting you know the keys are no longer inside the car's cab.  If you turn off the car and leave the keys in the car, the car won't lock itself until you take the keys out of the car.

@kyle you could easily end up on a wild goose chase without a "find" tool to show you exactly where your AirPods walked off too.

Especially for someone like me who always keeps his phone on silent and wouldn't be alerted in many scenarios (like AirPods falling down seat of car, random thief finding/stealing them, etc.).

Plus if your iPhone alerted you anytime you were a certain distance away from them, imagine being at home with your phone in your pocket, and AirPods in some other room. iPhone keeps alerting you every time you walk to the opposite of the house... I'd just shut the alert off permanently.

Personally I think the design of AirPods are just too prone to being lost, even with a "find" tool. I'd rather have some over ears.

Interesting idea, Kyle, but I'm with Lucas on the idea that an "away from AirPods alarm" wouldn't work out too well. It'd be common for me to be away from my headphones and getting some sort of alert about that would be super annoying.

@Lucas - I wonder if someone will make any sort of aftermarket add-on that could clip on the AirPods to make them over-ear (to address your concern)?
