I'm a huge fan of augmented reality, been looking forward to it for at least 20 years and have thoroughly enjoyed seeing it gradually emerge via things like Google Glass, Pokemon Go, Word Lens, and Ingress (the precursor to Pokemon Go).

It feels like we're getting very close to the mainstream adoption breakthrough, and Facebook's purchase of Oculus certainly helps them here. But I'm leery of jumping on board with Facebook's version, since they'll probably go very heavy into the advertising based approach. Not sure I really want AR based ads (although an interactive billboard or poster might be kind of cool...)

I'll be most excited to see what Apple comes up with. One of the biggest challenges for AR seems to be the hardware issue of getting the tech out of phones and into something like glasses. If anyone can manage to pull this off stylishly enough to bring it mainstream, it'll be Apple.

@Andy: Yeah, the HoloLens stuff looks pretty sweet. Too soon for me to be willing to drop $3k on it though. I'd be more inclined at this time towards checking out something like the Acer one that was demoed last month at GDC, but I've seen no way to actually get my hands on one...

Hololens is targeted at the Professional/Commercial sector at present not the SOHO market, Gamer!

When you have used a Hololens, you no longer want to wear a GIMP mask, like the rest!
