I think it's a bit pricey too. That said, Apple usually has the best quality and updates for their devices, so in the long run it may be worth it. Although, it would be nice to see them knock off $50-$100 so that they can reach us poor Apple Nerds. LOL.

At $349 it's expensive, but if it's anything like every other piece of Apple hardware, when you see it in person it will feel somewhat justified. At least IMO that's how most of the Apple Hardware feels to me.

Wow.. I've never minded paying a little extra for quality, but that's just totally insane.  Why not $17,900? .. or an even 20K? May just as well be..

I guess they're only targeting the Bill Gates and Donald Trumps of the world with those prices.

Save the bulls and cows! - buy from Walmart or Target !!

True.

However, the HomePod looks like it could replace your home stereo (assuming it can actually be used to AirPlay from an AppleTV).

There is no way those little hockey pucks (Dots) can come anywhere near the sound quality you'll get out of a HomePod (5"? woofer + 7 tweeters):

Yes but if the point is music then why would I buy one over a stereo with a dot? If the point is a voice assistant which can play music then why would I use that over any of the competitors? I don't get the market for this except for "people who don't have a stereo system and don't have any competitor products and are willing to buy a single device which does both but does neither exceptionally well and is overpriced".

Apple does have a slight advantage there with it's anonymous encrypted IDs.

I fully agree with not wanting unknown companies listening all the time. On the spectrum of who is listening when, Microsoft is the worst with Windows 10, Cortana, and being actively hostile towards privacy issues. After that comes Google who does everything mysteriously, doesn't document much of what they do or give you many controls, and has an interest in gathering as much data as possible to sell to advertisers.

On the other hand Amazon Alexa doesn't listen all the time. They have very clear documentation on exactly what they do when and they let you view or delete your complete voice history at any time. Furthermore there is a physical switch to turn the microphones off. They also have a fully open SDK for both hardware and software. Their main interest is getting you to buy stuff, just like Apple.
