Gigabyte starts to roll out fix for UEFI vulnerability affecting all its recent motherboards

Gigabyte's UEFI contains code to automatically download and install firmware updates without user intervention. Unfortunately with some very weak security allowing the possibility of bad actor exploitation of the feature.

https://eclypsium.com/blog/supply-chain-risk-from-gigabyte-app-center-backdoor/

Gigabyte have responded to security researchers  Eclypsium by announcing several fixes for boards containing their four leading chipsets.

https://www.gigabyte.com/Press/News/2091

Ironically the updates will use the existing flaw to fix themselves!

The lesson here is that the UEFI environment allows manufacturers to incorporate processes that run in the background without end-user intervention (or even their knowledge) it's difficult to secure your premises when you don't know where all the doors are!

MC556157 Microsoft is retiring the option to edit and reply with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files from attachment previews in Outlook. Users will still be able to edit their files using web or desktop apps and then attach a copy or a link to the file in OneDrive to share it.
When this will happen:
Microsoft will start rolling out this change in late June 2023.
How this will affect your organization:
Users of this feature will now have to open the attachment using web or desktop apps and then download a copy or save the edited file to OneDrive before sharing it either as an attachment or a link.

I just saw where Google is trying to change limits of SSL Certificates to change every 90 days instead of every year.

For small sites I manage where automating is not easy, this is going to be a PITA.

I spent last week at Building Business Capability (BBC), the largest annual gathering of business analysts and business architects. The event is run by the International Institute of Business Analysis™ (IIBA®), a professional association for the global community of business analysis professionals.

Business Analysts (BAs) typically work as liaisons between the technology and business groups in an organization. They define needs and recommend solutions that deliver value to stakeholders and that enable positive change in their organizations.

Scott standing outside the Speaker Ready Room at the BBC conferenceThough I’ve never held the job title of Business Analyst, most of the work I’ve done over the years has been at the intersection described above – the boundary between business and technology. I've always had a foot in both worlds, consequently, I’m very comfortable sharing knowledge with and learning new things from people in the BA community.

I first spoke at BBC in 2018 and have presented there annually since, with the exception of COVID-induced interruptions.

I'm  grateful to EE for sponsoring a portion of my travel costs this year as part of the Reconnect program.

Do you work with Business Analysts? Or are you a BA in your organization? I’d love to hear about your experience with or as a BA.

Scott, what were some new products that used AI for this?

Excellent question, Scott. There was a lot of talk and some demonstrations of gen AI in the conference sessions, including the opening keynote. However, I didn't see a lot of evidence on the exhibit floor. For context: This is a mid-sized trade show, and still recovering from the pandemic. Consequently, the exhibit area was smaller than in the before times. There were about two dozen vendors, about half of whom were product companies. The other half were education and consulting providers. Most of the vendors offer digital transformation, process documentation/mapping/automation, and business rules solutions. I didn't spend a lot of time with any one vendor but there wasn't as much obvious gen AI activity as I'm sure there will be in a couple of months.

Hi everyone!!

I saw this post this morning about how ChatGPT has affected that other supposed expert site (okay in all fairness I have from time to time gotten some good information from Stack Overflow and although there is not as much garbage and misinformation to sift through as Google it can't hold a candle to us here).

Anyway, speaking of sifting through garbage here you go...

https://www.similarweb.com/blog/insights/ai-news/stack-overflow-chatgpt

Honestly I still don't get the hype over ChatGPT.  To me, here it is in a nutshell:  Let's take the most powerful server farm we can find, put some analyzing software on it, feed it EVERYTHING THAT HAS EVER EXISTED, and...  see what it does!!

Thoughts??

Scott, I totally agree with your last statement.  It is a mix of AI and human interaction that is the key.  What concerns me right now with the hype over ChatGPT is that the focus is on the AI alone and not on the human interaction which is required.

AI is an evolving technology.  It is evolutionary, not revolutionary, and still has a long way to go.  ChatGPT is a step in that evolution, but only a step.  It is valuable and useful, but not the answer to everything.  Not without a lot of help.

We humans gravitate for the easy and cheap. Working with people creates some degree of friction in one form or another. I would prefer the mix, but with the very low barrier to entry, it makes for a potentially bad situation.

Title: Modern Data Warehousing: Empowering Insights with Azure Platform

Introduction:
In the era of data-driven decision-making, organizations are increasingly relying on efficient and scalable data warehousing solutions to unlock valuable insights. Azure, Microsoft's cloud computing platform, offers a robust suite of services that revolutionize traditional data warehousing. In this blog, we will delve into the world of modern data warehousing using Azure, exploring its key features, benefits, and how it empowers businesses to gain a competitive edge.

The Azure Data Warehouse Advantage:
Azure provides an extensive range of data warehousing tools and services that are designed to meet the modern demands of big data analytics. At the core of Azure's data warehousing capabilities is Azure Synapse Analytics, a unified analytics service that combines big data and data warehousing into a single, integrated platform. With Synapse Analytics, organizations can seamlessly ingest, prepare, manage, and serve data for immediate insights.

Scalability and Flexibility:
One of the significant advantages of Azure for data warehousing is its scalability. Azure allows you to scale your data warehouse resources up or down based on your specific requirements, ensuring optimal performance and cost-efficiency. Azure Synapse Analytics employs a distributed architecture, allowing you to elastically scale your data warehousing resources to handle large volumes of data and complex analytics …

A little summary of the first day at EIC.
This conference is a good mean to update all his knowledge on all actual and important aspects of the security.
The security is using a lot of acronyms, and it is often important to better understand of what we are speaking.
Of course, a lot of partners are there to explain their technologies.
But, nearly all the sessions are trying to be generic and usable with different products.
So, the atmosphere is different of the usual "Microsoft" conferences that I usually attend.
Curiously, it seems also that the dressing is a little more formal.
I don't know if these elements are linked. :)

How to replace Dlookup and Dsum In MS Access

Many beginners struggle to replace Domain functions in Microsoft Access in order to gain speed when using MS Access as a front end and MS SQL Server a back end, the golden rule has been to transfer or convert all complex queries in access to SQL server views. But there are situations where you want to get a value or a summed figure from unrelated table/query, this where many people have been relying on domain functions.
Using the afore mentioned domain functions makes Microsoft Access extremely slow or if there are many domain functions, access can easily stop responding and give up finally. So, what is the way forward?
Answer:
Open record set is the way to go! Simply assign the control that require receiving a new value from a query as demonstrated below:

SIMPLE VBA

Dim db As DAO.Database
Dim strSql As String
Dim prm As DAO.Parameter
Set db = CurrentDb
strSql = "SELECT StatusFour FROM [tblOrder] WHERE [OrderID] =" & [Forms]![frmOrder]![CboGrnstocopy]
With db.CreateQueryDef("", strSql)
For Each prm In .Parameters
prm.value = Eval(prm.Name)
Next
    With .OpenRecordset(dbOpenSnapshot, dbSeeChanges)
        If Not .EOF() Then
         Me.txtOrdersAuditing = .Fields(0).value
    End If
    End With
End With
Set prm = Nothing
Set db = Nothing

Where there StatusFour if you want sum that control, simply Sum(StatusFour) AS Total (This becomes DSum) if you leave it just as StatusFour , then that will take like Dlookup.

Regards

Christopher

If there is one reason you need to regularly patch your Windows desktops and servers with latest security patches for Windows, just try this lab from TryHackMe ! (for 5 minutes!) and you can see how easy it is for my Grandma, to obtain Local Administrator rights to a Windows OS, using the LocalPotato Exploit! I told you!
