How many Internet services are hurting your online business? Do you know?

I wrote the following short article sharing our own real experiences, wondering how many others might be suffering similar issues. One of my examples is AVG virus scanner flagging our software, never letting us know and not responding to our asking why and what we can do about it.

Trust Issues: Third Party Companies Damaging Your SaaS

Seems unfair that such companies are making money while those being listed are struggling to figure out why their signups are down.

To me, this has become a serious problem, almost an epidemic that needs discussion.
It's already difficult for new ventures and it's becoming overwhelming to have to deal with all the problems that are killing innovation.

I hope someone finds this interesting enough to consider it an important topic that needs a lot more attention.

Interesting (somewhat) news from Microsoft on Access now on a regular basis:

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/access-blog/access-issues-fixed-in-the-may-2022-monthly-release/ba-p/3535339

Doesn't go into a ton of detail, but maybe one of those bugs that is bugging you may have been addressed!

Microsoft is abandoning Remote Desktop Services

At least that's how I'm interpreting things as I read between the lines of this article:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployoffice/endofsupport/windows-server-migration

Consider (quotes from the above article):
Direct deployment of Microsoft 365 Apps isn't supported on Windows Server 2022 as it's a fixed, non-changing operating system.
So that means no one would likely install RDS Session Hosts on 2022, Microsoft's newest Server version.

Microsoft 365 Apps is supported on Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server 2016 only until October 2025.
This means that, even though the server OS in the case of 2019 will be supported (through Extended Support) through 2029, it will become unable to host sessions for users starting in October of 2025.

Microsoft's solution for those requiring in-house session hosts is Azure Stack HCI.  Which on a single 16 core host would run not less than $530 per month.  For an ability that USED to cost as a one-time fee every 5-9 years, a server license ($1000), RDS and Windows CALs ($200/each).  Think about it.  An RDS solution for 25 users would cost $6,000 once every, say, 6 years, will now cost $39,000 to run on prem with Azure Stack.

Or your could migrate to Windows 365 and get a basic Windows machine (D2 V3) for just $540 per month (or so, on a 3 year commitment with Windows License), or also $39,000.

Please if you think this is reasonable... or I've got …

The other shoe I’m waiting to see if it falls is on basic authentication.

They’ve delayed, delayed, and delayed. Now they’ve added a “one time three month extension”

I think they’re in for a world of hurt with customers if they really follow through and disable it at the end of December.

To add insult to injury, they’re not supporting oAuth in Outlook for POP3 or IMAP.  That’s a move to force you to keep email on the server.

I think both of these are going to break more software than they realize.

They are supposedly doing this in the name of the security, but they could’ve taken the simple step of requiring more complex passwords and making sure that all connections were on TLS/SSL.   That would have been a good start and not have broken anything.

Recently, users of O365 Microsoft Access have been getting #Deleted on all records when using various backends (SQL Server, mySQL, etc) using certain data types as a primary key.  This is a bug that was introduced in build 2205 a little over a week ago.

The Microsoft Access team has done some lightening fast work on this and is rolling out a fix now.   If you are on the current channel, make sure you run your Office Update if you are experiencing this problem.   If you are on the semi-annual channel, the fix is still in the process of being rolled out.

A work around is to revert back to an earlier version, or use ODBC v 17 drivers.

Heads up we found ManageEngine Desktop Central took what looks like a Windows 11 patch and tried to upgrade windows 10 machines today. The new patches are being flagged as applicable to Windows 10. I have a question posted about it here, but thought it was news-worthy.

Seems funny when VMWare takes down a program before having the successor ready.
Possibly all the years it had major problems, possibly security related (just speculation).

Sorry, it was going to happen one day, VMware have retired VMware vCenter Server Standalone Converter, e.g. vCenter Convertor for short, it's been a long time, and I've answered many questions, and is still the Number 1 question asked by Members, but it is no longer available to download! It has now been removed, so my best advice, is to try and find another source on a download site!

Immutable backup repository for Veeam

EE-title-veeam-linux.pngIf you plan to establish in-house immutable backups, Veeam Backup & Replication is an excellent choice.
However, that requires Linux, and you - as a Windows admin - know only little about Linux.
If so, this series of articles is for you:

Build an immutable backup repository for Veeam Backup & Replication

Every step is documented with full code and screenshots.
