How do you get into the system when, when you do not have the codes, purchased a mini VaxII (digital) with programs on it and can not get into the system why?

The password files are still set to whatever the previous owner had them.  You need to contact whoever you bought it from and get the root password (since this is the unix area, I assume your miniVax is running Ultrix or some other flavor of Unix).  Once you have root priviledges create a user account or edit an existing one and remove its password.

You can do this by editing /etc/passwd.  The lines will look something like

s814mll:x:1003:101:Mike Lockhart:/home/s814mll:/usr/bin/csh

This is a series of fields separated by ':' chars.  The second field is the password.  In this file the 'x' means there is a file called /etc/shadow that really holds the password.  You may see a bunch of gibberish looking letters that are the actual encrypted password.  Just delete everything between the ':'s.

You probably want to change the password once you're in.  You can use this account for normal purposes.  It is better to do most things as a normal user and switch to root occasionally rather than do things as root all of the  time.  As you learn more about system admin this will become old hat.
