"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The answer I would reccommend is don't use Netscape, as its USENET News abilities are limited at best.   Go to www.forteinc.com and download a copy of Free Agent, in my opinion the best off-line newsreader out there. (Though some reccommend Microplanet Gravity).  You can configure Free Agent to store all binary attachments in a certain directory (customizable by newsgroup).  Free Agent will also handle MIME-encoded as well as UUE format file attachments, and has cross-post checking (the full version, Forte Agent, does at least, not sure about the free version).  I know this doesn't directly answer your question, but I have used both Netscape News and Agent, and I would take Agent hands down any day.  Free Agent is also much more customizable that Netscape News.
